李 志平 icjun — This book was the basis for the incredibly misguided slasher movie of the same name starring Lauren Bacall. What makes the book so amazing is that the story is told completely through correspondence through the characters--the movie touches on this, but nowhere near the level in the book. A really fun read, especially if you've seen the movie.

Alessandro Grande anamgnammo — hilarious and irreverent, and forcibly stripping the distance between the reader and the could-have-been-something-like historical christ, the man. it reallllly is a great exercise to play around with low christology in this way. to some it will feel unbearably irreverent. but i think certain vital questions of belief and spirituality can't be answered if we fear christ too much, hold him at too great an arm's length. a wonderful humanization of a character.

Andres Chavez ndrew14efc2 — I liked this a lot when I read it, but Byatt's obsession with epistemology and academic bickering seems petty and uninteresting in retrospect. I'm not sure I'd want to reread it.

Amber Allen-parsons amberallenparsonsddd — I sort of think that when you finish this book, there ought to be a page that lists a website where you can register to receive a t-shirt that says, "I survived The Hour I First Believed." I applaud Wally Lamb for tackling these topics, for his attention to detail, and for weaving everything together...but this book is exhausting to read. At first, you're just confused because the story jumps all over the place. (Am I reading about Columbine or some weird kid named Velvet? Am I reading about Columbine or infidelity? Am I reading about Columbine or Connecticut?) Then, just when you get into the groove, Wally Lamb makes you intermittently read page after page of (fake) historical documents and a research paper. He handles it skillfully, and everything he does has a point (eventually), but I didn't necessarily enjoy the process of getting to the point. Four stars for the skill, though.
