Bobby Duebelbeis bobbybe1a — Straight up romance and straight up entertainment. And, truth be told, gets you a bit hot under the collar without being too mature for the YA shelves. Even the wintery bits of the story make for perfect sunny day reading, lawn chair lounging with an iced coffee by your side. At least that's how I read it, and it was a lot of fun. I can't not compare this to Maureen Johnson's Girl at Sea : girl begrudgingly leaves American life behind just as she's about to enjoy a summer at home figuring out how to get the boy she-works-with-and-kissed-that-one-time-and-then-nothing-else-happened-between-them-so-there's-a-lot-of-expectations-building to kiss her again, for an otherwise completely desirable European destination thanks to her cocky (and rich) Dad. Johnson's Cleo is dealing with a father who won't butt-out of her business and insists on walking around in a captain's hat, while Anna's, even more comically, is an oompa-loompa orange fake-n-baked "Don't Die My Love" Nicholas Sparks caricature with too much bestseller money on his hands. Where Girl at Sea also has elements of mystery and history Anna is more strictly a romance. She likes him, she doesn't like him. He likes her, he doesn't like her. Paris tourist attraction, serious illness scare, more sexual tension, funny quips, repeat. It definitely fulfills its romance and fun quotas, even if the cancer scare seems a bit hypocritical given all the cracks at books like A Walk to Remember. Sexy times aside, Anna's feelings of being a fish out of water in a foreign country and the rainbow of friendship dynamics are where this book really rises above. You could easily pass this one out to a whole slew of gals and they'd eat it right up, like I did. Perfect beach read. I'll be adding more Stephanie Perkins to my reading list.
