Allie Powell alliehpowell — This book held my interest, and I found myself staying up late at night, racing to the end. Similar in themes to “The DaVinci Code,” I preferred The Labyrinth” to the former for a few reasons. I liked the historical backdrop of the Catholic Inquisition, the locales in southern France (medieval and present day – new places to put on my list to visit), and another interpretation of the grail/Holy Grail beyond that of a physical chalice. While I found the timeline of “Code” incredibly unbelievable and distracting (seriously, it takes Langdon 48 hours, at most, to find the resting place of the Grail?), I was only a little put-off at the too-similar characters between past and present in “Labyrinth.” I also guessed the true identities of a few characters before the big reveals, and parts of the crowning conclusion seemed to be lifted from the ending of “Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade.” Still this is a really fun book to read, great for a quiet weekend or time at the beach.

Jassim Talat jassimtalat — This is a great coming on age novel for middle grade readers, and it is most enjoyable. The novel is illustrated, which helps bring the story to life right on the page. Yet, the illustrations do not overpower the imagination of the reader; they are tastefully done and evenly interspersed. Any MG readers interested in the knights of the realm, or historical mythology in general, will enjoy this story. The storyline flows easily and each chapter offers humorous insight and action, all leading up to the suspenseful conclusion. Although this novel is the third in a series, it stands alone and does not need any prior background knowledge—the novel explains itself. Sir Gawain is a respectable knight who learns the value of courtesy through the events within the story, and this overarching theme is one our children can never hear too much.
