I didn't know when I would go, I just knew that I would go -- someday, when the time felt right and I was feeling courageous enough. But it seems life has a funny way of not turning out exactly as you had planned. I never made it to Africa, and given my circumstances, I probably never will. I have had to find other means to help -- primarily through donations or child sponsorship from afar. Still, some part of me -- a large part of me -- has not let go of that long-held dream. Perhaps that's why I so love to read stories about people who DID go to Africa to volunteer. Or to Pakistan. Or Nepal. Or wherever the case may be. In Little Princes: One Man's Promise to Bring Home the Lost Children of Nepal, Conor Grennan describes his journey to Nepal to volunteer for a couple months at a children's orphanage. He had never dreamed of doing something like this. He wanted to leave his (secure and well-paying) job in Prague and take a year off to travel the world. He decided to start in Nepal volunteering with orphaned children to ease the judgment of others who may see his trip as irresponsible or self-indulgent. It was meant to be a one-time, three month experience. But once again, life has a funny way of not turning out quite how you expected. Helping the children of Nepal is now Conor Grennan's life mission. I've read some reviews that say this book (a memoir) is too self-focused. But isn't that what a memoir is supposed to be? This was Conor's story, and I enjoyed reading about the children through his eyes as we went along his journey with him. With so much negative news in the world these days, it's nice to read about people who are helping to make a difference for our future generation -- one child at a time. An engaging, touching and wonderful story.
