Sid Sharma sudhirsharda48 — To crib a line from Roger Ebert: I hated, hated, hated this book. Paulo Coelho knows how to put a sentence together in a pleasing way, and the audiobook is beautifully read by Jeremy Irons. Everything else about this book I hated. Every idea, character, plot point, and line of dialogue made me want to scream. Sitting in my car on the Beltway and listening to this, I did often find myself groaning, making gagging noises, rolling my eyes, and shouting at my iPod. The story is called a “fable” but this is no excuse for this kind of heavy-handed didacticism. I hate to think that anyone could actually believe or live their life by this kind of New Age mumbo-jumbo: listening to “the Soul of the World” which “wants you to succeed” at your “personal legend” (until something bad happens, and then of course it’s the “Soul of the World” testing you to make sure you’re worthy,) only the wise can understand love at first sight, you’ll succeed at anything if you believe hard enough, etc. I also have to fault Coelho for breaking the classic “show, don’t tell” rule of writing. When a character actually says “You see, I fear change,” something in your storytelling has gone wrong. I can recommend this for only two situations: you love Jeremy Irons, or you enjoy being slapped in the face by a very heavy hand of New Age crap.

Biter William biterwilliam — This is the first part of the USA Trilogy and I enjoyed it. The book certainly has that sprawling, "great American novel" feel about it. Or maybe it's the left counterpart to "Atlas Shrugged" (it has that clunky dialogue, go on forever, huge ensemble cast of characters feel as well). As a result, I think he should have just played that long suit and dropped the literary pretensions of the newsreel & camera's eye devices. Just give me the action straight with no chaser, Johnny. At any rate, I am enjoying the developing epic, but I can't help but wonder what experience Dos Passos had with women that made him think they all believe everything is so "exciting". Sheesh!
