Xiao Biplob xiaobip — I was very reluctant to read this book. It looked good enough but the reviews were so back and forth, either people loved it or hated it. There was no in between. As you can see I finally got around to reading it. It was a bit of a rough start. The first 50 pages were awful. Way too much detail about the surroundings and not enough about the characters or time, or place. I mean would it be so hard to tell me how the horde began or more about the bugs (nanoagents). Or tell me why Mina looks so different???? And what's the Creche? Even though the beginning was rough by page 52 I was all in. I heard some people didn't like Rhys (The Iron Duke) I guess i can see it but I love him. His attitude and morals as a pirate and duke are set to this world and the way things are there. I still haven't finished this book however so i will do so before i finish my review.

_er_oornink
Ger Doornink _er_oornink — A thriller writer who needs no introduction whatsoever, whose scalpel clean prose has given an entire generation reason to read, Dean Koontz delivers us the third book in his popular Odd Thomas series. Although at times his tomes have given us numerous grounds to skip them altogether , or perhaps throw them across the room , one cannot help but feel admiration for such a prolific, industrial and unbelievably swift composer whose work ethic makes most writers looked positively blocked. For those not familiar with our protagonist, Odd Thomas is basically the boy from The Sixth Sense all grown up. Readers of supernatural fiction might find this foundation unbearably insipid, knowing it's certainly been tapped in the genre numerous times throughout history. But Dean charged the original novel in the series with an almost magical sentimentality; the sequel, Forever Odd, was somewhat blighted in comparison , and fell very short capturing the charisma of the original. Whereas the best books are written from the heart, Dean seemed to use his head with the sequel: a strategy that more often than not ensures failure. With this in mind - I hesitantly approached Brother Odd, hoping that Dean had received critical feedback regarding the second book - and attended to what was said. In this volume, Odd Thomas has retreated into the snowy Sierra mountains and joined a phalanx of monks as a 'guest' resident of St Bartholomew's abbey. He also shares his space with nuns (of which some are privy to his secret), psychically and mentally challenged children , a dog named Boo and the ghost of Elvis Presley. But his peace in isolation doesn't last long as one of the monks goes missing and then is subsequently murdered in a hellish manner as an affront to his beliefs. It's not long before the shadowy Bodach's make their return, sniffing and salivating along the corridors of St. Bartholomew's as harbingers for future carnage to follow. Unless, of course, Odd can outwit this destiny with all the talents at his disposal. The cast in Brother Odd is eccentric and hilarious, with Dean using his continued tradition of humor to the full extent. However, one of the main players, the Russian born Rodian Romanovich, could have been handled more deftly; his character is clumsy and oppressive, his lines out of sync with the real. The salvation to Dean's errors comes in the form of his philosophical questings on the nature of reality. Those of us who have taken the journeys One Door Away From Heaven and From the Corner of his Eye will know his blend of science and the supernatural is often enlightening. Weather it be 'spooky effects at a distance' or 'the strange order that underlies all chaos' , the optimistic and life-affirming messages are there for people to decode. And for pessimists like yours-truly, this can often be beneficial and gratifying. Dean Koontz is a writer guarantor, an author whom (like a four-star restaurant that rarely disappoints), promises a story that will sufficiently entertain even when he is batting at the bottom of his game. Rarely, when such huge input is put out into the masses can we criticize. I must admit, the green eyed jealously bug has surfaced within me regarding him: This guy is an enigma; the amount of words spewed out reflects someone who is born to the pastime. Brilliant, sometimes terrible, but nevertheless a treasure - the religion of reading and its disciples are ultimately lucky to have him.

spankanto
Anto Lombardospank spankanto — This is the third in the Face down series. I enjoy these mysteries and the main character is quite independent. I would not put them down as literary masterpieces but for a nice read they are enjoyable. The main Character, Lady Appleton, has been developing as the series progresses and I look forward to reading the rest of the series.

antoniobaltazar
António Baltazar antoniobaltazar — This one is a 3.5 for me. I liked it, but there were just a couple that I loved. Charlaine Harris - Two Blondes: Not just a Sookie story, it's a Sookie & PAM story. I love Pam, which made me love this. Pam & Sookie have a "Girls Weekend" at the casinos in Mississippi, where they can gamble, see a show, and do just one little job for Eric. Cue danger. Fun story, over too quickly, one of my favorite Sookie shorts. Probably best enjoyed by fans of the series (and to be honest, if it wasn't for my love of one of the characters, I probably would be a little less enthusiastic about it). Sarah Smith - The Boys Go Fishing: what happens to an immortal superhero when the golden days of superheros are gone. Sad in many ways, but a light at the end of the tunnel. Jeaniene Frost - One for the Money: A Cat & Bones story set after the events in book 4. Really loved it. Cat & Bones need to guard an heiress with a contract out on her life. They also need to deal with Cat's mom. I'd never call Bones a saint, but his actions here are sure to bring squees of joy from fans. (view spoiler) Not sure how I would feel about this one if I wasn't caught up on books 1-4. Daniel Stashtower - Meanwhile, Far Across the Caspian Sea: this one was odd, but still drew me in. About a guy who works for "LifeSpan books" and his dealings with a particular coworker. Lots of questions left unanswered, but it still worked for me. I need to go find out more about this author. A. Lee Martinez - The Innsmouth Nook: I think it needed more. Too short, although I did like the twist, I would have liked it more if there had been more to the story. Jeff Abbott - Safe and Sound: A "lawyer-turned-"journalist" exploits a family's search for their missing son for ratings gold. I wasn't surprised by anything here, but it was a satisfying story. L.A. Banks - Seeing is Believing: a young psychic heads to New Orleans to gather some supplies to fight off werewolves in the bayou, and finds what she's been missing. Really loved this one, probably my favorite out of the whole book. Liked the characters (it even has a scary, powerful-as-hell granny) and the interactions between the characters. Need to read more from this author. Katie MacAlister - The Perils of Effrijim: Part of the Aisling Grey series. I haven't read this series, so I'm feeling a little lost. It is the most light-hearted of the bunch, involving Jim. Christopher Golden - Thin Walls: An example of why when it seems like it's too good to be true, it probably is, especially when it's a superhot chick who promises to let you do whatever you want to her. Lilith Saintcrow - The Heart is Always Right: Thi one involves Gargoyles fighting the Big Bad. I liked it. You are just dropped into the world, and while I still have lots of questions, I never felt lost. Close second for my favorite story. Chris Grabentstein - The Demon in the Dunes: I was wondering where this one was going, and it was not what I expected at all. Good story. Sharan Newman - Home from America: A family reunion takes Pat and his family back to Ireland, and his "homeland" is not what he expected. This one was all right. I was a bit surprised at the ending. Toni L. P. Kelner - Pirate Dave's Haunted Amusement Park: I really liked this one. A newly made werewolf takes one last vacation by herself (before pledging to a pack), and goes back to the amusement park she loved as a kid. Fun story, light with a little action. Great way to end the anthology.
