Alexandre Moschini _oschini — ORIGINALLY POSTED AT Fantasy Literature. Paladin of Souls takes place just after the events of The Curse of Chalion and focuses on one of the minor female characters in Curse. It can stand alone, but you'll get a lot more out of it if you read Curse first. This is another beautifully written masterpiece which won several prestigious awards, including a Hugo and a Nebula. Not only is Bujold an excellent writer, but her world of Chalion is believable and complex, the magic is deep, fascinating, and just plain scary. This is very far from the wizard-coming-of-age, orphan-boy-saves-the-world, or hunk-whips-up-on-the-bad-guys-with-a-cool-sword kind of fantasy epic. This is fresh. And highly recommended. Andrea Moitinho alchemybrand — Someone recommended this book to me as I was about to head off on my first 5-month sabbatical and, just as she suspected, I really enjoyed reading about Gilbert's "sabbatical," and her pursuit of pleasure, devotion, and balance. She is a wonderful story-teller and had me chuckling from the get-go. I especially appreciated the reminder that "God dwells within you, AS you." And the call to be both more prayerful and more playful. I'll definitely be re-reading this one - RICH with Sermon Fodder.

Miguel Vilela miguelvilela — I read this book because I was intrigued by the predicament of the "middle place" (and it has been plastered everywhere!). However, I feel like the author took her readers' intelligence for granted and felt the need to over-emphasize details of the book- which really started to annoy me. I get that the father and daughter had a very special bond...you don't need to have him screaming out "lovey!!" 4 times per page!

Joseph Croducer _ — I really loved this book, with its sweet characters and town.

Nina Aliga _inaaaliga — I loved this book at first but towards the end I just felt like it was too long. This has lots of thinly veiled political commentary. I really liked the twist on the Wizard of Oz story.

Charles Goldman charlespar9ca7 — What amazed me most about this book is how fast-paced it feels. It's long, but there's so much tension that builds so well, I flew threw it. Especially impressive considering that the events only span a few days. Winterland has a wide array of fascinating characters. Especially recommended for folks who like a bit of political intrigue in their crime fiction. The depictions of modern Ireland and its government were fascinating. The subject matter and political bent reminded me a lot of In This Rain, but this one was at once more wide-ranging and more coherent. Ambitious and excellent.
