Cambodia, home of the great Khmer civilization which created the vast temple complex at Angkor Wat, is one of the most fascinating and distinctive countries in Southeast Asia. Most visitors come to see Angkor Wat, lost in the jungle for centuries, and now a renowned World Heritage Site. However, Cambodia has much more to offer in addition to Angkor, including the landmarks and temples of Phnom Penh, wildlife watching at Angkor and Tonle Sap, and a still-present French colonial heritage - visitors arriving at Phnom Penh international airport may be surprised to find French taking precedence over English on the arrival signs, and the aroma of coffee and croissants in the air. Juan Pedro juanpedrorp — This book made me think about love.

Brianna Renert briannarenert — I really liked this. A good old-fashioned, Encyclopedia Brown type comic with a cute protagonist and little more on its mind than spinning a straightfoward but exciting yarn. Just fun. Calling stories "yarns" is extremely relaxing.

Sylvia Roquez yvalis — I loved the Voice (language) in the book - the 3 friends (girls) were so great together. This is a YA book, and a fast read. I would recommend this if you're a city kid like me, or enjoy a trip into city culture (The Bronx in the 80's??--whenever Tupac was big).

indianropetrick
Reynaldo Lass indianropetrick — well not my usual reading but intriguing. The book covers the classical composers of the 20th century and attempts to explain what influences their work. I was most interested in the cultural and geopolitical influences on art...especially WWII impacts. Also was fun to just think about "composing as a career" and what that world must be like. Alex Ross is a great writer.

Miguel Gomez miguelgomezpaint — The topic seems narrow--an pedogical study of early education in one country--but its implications are vast. It describes how children learn critical thinking and empathy/compassion, the two traits that (it seems to me) best serve our world. NOTE: The author is simply describing Japanese education, not comparing it to that anywhere else. But I will mention that measurements of Japanese students in various subjects indicate high-level comprehension. Key points: 1) Preschool is play. Children play indoors, outdoors in the mud, supervised or unsupervised; this is punctuated by brief, highly structured formalities. There are also longer sessions of "reflection", wherein the teacher leads a discussion of that day's incidents, eliciting students' observations and ideas for problem-solving. The main goal of preschool is helping kids to enjoy and listen to each other. Teachers do not generally scold or punish students. 2) Elementary school continues the theme of community-building and reflection (now including both social and academic topics). Students make up their own classroom rules, after the teacher has let them "bump up against each other" for a few weeks, in order to feel the need for order. 3) By placing social goals AHEAD of academic goals, teachers help students to enjoy school and feel comfortable discussing complex ideas. A teacher might spend 10 minutes getting the kids emotionally "hooked" into a lesson before actually doing academic work--and so, being invested, the kids learn deeply. 4) Teachers do not use rewards and punishments (sticker charts, national exams, etc.) The emphasis is on building a child's bonds with classmates and helping him to internalize values. It works. In conclusion: If we want our future leaders to be both wise and kind, we need to make sure that every child is well educated.

Henrike Dijkstra henrikedij4acc — If you could live forever, if you had the chance to stop aging and look exactly as you do, right now, forever….would you? That is the question asked of readers throughout this book. This story follows a young girl named Winnifred, or Winnie, who one day stumbles across the Tuck family. Winnie discovers the Tucks have wound up living eternally after drinking water from a magical spring, and they kidnap her to try and convince her to keep their secret, to prevent others from doing all sorts of horrific things to secure eternal life- after all, what is mankind more afraid of than Death? As she spends more and more time with them, she begins to wonder if eternal life would really be such a bad thing. At only around 140 pages, this book is a very quick read, but my god, it is a wonderful book. Babbit is a brilliant world builder and despite the seeming simplicity of the book, it challenges its readers of all ages to contemplate the debate of whether eternal life would really be such a good thing. It also is a nice way of making the large and scary idea of death seem not that scary actually, to the younger audiences. I was introduced to this book through seeing the 2002 movie when I was around 15, so I was definitely older than most readers who are made to read this book in primary school as part of their school syllabus. But I picked up the book, and I absolutely loved it. Normally you can say “I prefer the book” or “I prefer the movie”, but I honestly can’t say either way on this story, which is a rarity. There are some differences between the film and the book, for example, in the film, Winnie is older- a teenager and there is a romance storyline whereas in the book, Winnie is a child. As I said, the world-building in this book is lovely. I enjoy re-reading this book every August because it has left that much of an impression on me. The opening paragraph has become comforting to me. The characters are solid and stay with you, and if you haven’t seen the movie, I highly recommend it as well, if only because the musical score is absolutely stunning. I just highly recommend this story to anyone who enjoys thought provoking books. That’s all I can say, it is wonderful. “Don’t be afraid of death; be afraid of an unlived life. You don’t have to live forever, you just have to live.” For more of my reviews, please visit thebookheap http://thebookheap.wordpress.com
