Anton Dem tonydem — My Thoughts: This book has it all: an intriguing premise, beautiful writing, and the best kind of emotional highs and lows. I simply adored it. Yes, it's Groundhog's Day with a twist. But this is one of those stories that stuck with me after I closed the book. It really made me think about the millions of decisions we make every day, the value of each and every minute, and what life is all about. Characters: I enjoyed Sam as the narrator of the story. It was easy to relate to her and care about her story. Her reactions to the situations she was thrown into felt very real. Another character that I loved was Kent. His changing relationship with Sam was perfect, and it'll be a long time before I smell freshly cut grass or laundry detergent and don't think of Kent. I enjoyed Sam's family, especially younger sister Izzy and her mom who won't cross the line of peeling red nail polish at the entrance to Sam's room. My only complaint about the characters is that I couldn't really tell Sam's best friends apart. They kind of melded into one LindsayAllyElody for me. It wasn't a huge issue - I still liked the scenes with these characters, but I often had to stop and think about which friend was which, or flip back through past scenes as a reference. Setting: The setting was well-developed: the school, Smoker's Lounge, the strip with Hunan Kitchen and The Country's Best Yogurt, Kent's house...all of these places were very real in my mind. Ending (Spoiler-Free!): Perfect. When I had about 20 pages left to go, I wasn't sure how the book would end or even how I wanted it to end. But once I finished the last page, I realized that there wasn't any other way, and it was perfect. Writing Style: Simply stunning. Oliver uses all five senses to throw readers into the story and doesn't let go. I could hear Izzy's lisp, smell Kent and his bedroom, taste the frozen yogurt and the orange beef (ew), see the roses for Cupid Day, and feel every emotion. The details were consistently vivid and added dimension to the story. The writing itself was exquisite. There were many lines that were so beautiful, I had to stop and close my eyes for a second after reading them, then read them again. Stars: 5 out of 5. Go read it!
