The story of the publication of and publicity campaign for this book is FASCINATING! Letty Cottin Pogrebin of MS. fame got her start by heading up the publicity for VOTD, for eff's sake.

A Z beetleaz — one of my favorite compilations ever. hilarious at times, upsetting at others. the four quartets is masterful.

Archie Proudfoot softcityclothing — Terrible. Not as involving as the most lightweight of Bill Bryson and completely devoid of any of the occasional insights and hilarious passages that can make this genre an inspiration to travel and discovery as well as a pleasant way to spend a few hours. The result is that it reads like an extended version of one of those dreadful pieces by hack journalists in the front of a Sunday paper magazine. Instead of becoming the invisible friend of the author you want to knock him over the head with something hard and heavy. "Americans are just so American while I am really just an uncomfortable middle class English guy and the funny thing was...". So drole. Even worse, most of it appears to be complete exaggeration when the humour in travel reading can usually be found in the truth. I couldn't put it down, fast enough.
