Alex Pines apines — An interesting tale of someone who can in many ways be boiled down to a con man. Not that Kevin didn't have high end technical skills, but what truly made him Cybercriminal Number 1 was the art of persuasion and social engineering. Kevin reminded me of Frank Abagnale in Catch Me if You Can updated for the Internet age. I previously knew of aspects of the Mitnick legend and parts of his exploits, but it was nice getting a further picture of how far he went. The only possible negative of this book is that some of the phreaking concepts are so foreign to the younger generation, I am not sure if they can grasp the nuance of what was being done.

Michael Andrew makdesigner — The title alone sparked my curiosity, but this book was also excerpted and strongly recommended in "Reading Like a Writer" as an example of great writing. And rightly so. I'm amazed at the way every word seems well-chosen, and by the fact that a book with such high-quality writing manages to be hysterically funny rather than stuffy and serious. The descriptions of Russian immigrants are so hysterical that I remembered some lines when I was running on the treadmill and started cracking up! People must have thought I was crazy. I've only read the first chapter, but as you can see I'm already really impressed; we'll see if I change my mind as the book progresses and I get a sense of the plot, but so far I'm bowled over by the writing and rolling with laughter. OK -- now that I've finished it -- I kind of agree with Tamar and Dani, although I still think the book had its merits. Basically, he's a good writer but it was way too long. I felt like much of it was overdone and superfluous. I wonder what I would have done as an editor to streamline this book, and I don't envy the editor who had that difficult job; however, some streamlining was definitely in order. I think it might have worked better as a novella.
