Ellert Juliusson ellertthor — Rated 5 stars for being interesting, thought-provoking, challenging accepted ideas and attitudes, and being a personal favorite. Orwell spent a short part of his life as a bum on the streets of Paris and London and as a kitchen slave in a Parisian hotel and a Parisian restaurant. This book is an autobiographical account of that time, of all the people he met, and of the experience of that kind of life. Down and Out is filled with interesting characters and insane situations, all the more interesting and insane because they actually existed. It's also filled with the kinds of insights born out of experiencing life on that level. Some insights that stuck with me: When Orwell absolutely doesn't have a cent (er, pence/sou that is) to his name, he discovers that the worst thing about being flat broke isn't any of those imagined fears he had about poverty back when he was a regular member of the middle class with money in his pockets. The worst thing about poverty is the boredom. Orwell also punctures some myths about the goodness of all those who are in the charity business. There's a kind of degradation of the soul that often goes along with accepting other people's charity, and charity isn't always quite charity when there are certain religious, ideological, and psychological strings attached. But, forget the review - go out and give this one a read!

Caleb Bonanno calebbonanno — I'm really not sure what I think about this book. About half of the chapters are worth reading, but the other half are a real struggle; due to the author going off on some sort of ego trip or random rant. For those chapters that are worth reading, they are great and really get to the main point of trading; reading behind the prices into the psychology of what everyone else is doing. He does a great job of putting showing that you need to start thinking of it as a conflict of views for each trade. There is always someone of the other side of your trade. He really helps to view the common ideas in a different way. Unfortunately the rest of the book is simply one big ego trip and a diatribe of random philosophical thoughts. These chapters were rather short though so it wasn't too hard to get through them. Overall it's an ok read. Definitely not going to recommend it ahead of a large number of other books.

铭锐 林 linmingrui — ** spoiler alert ** I loved this book! A lot of things really happened. I remember one part when James was in a hurry to his hypnotherapy appointment when Scott stopped him on the way to tell him about his new relationship with Fern the new librarian. I felt like I was in a hurry too for some reason. I also thought that was the cutest story about Scott and Fern. Anyway back to the mystery part of the story. The supper club members had a few new additions to their team. They are Sullie, a fellow that works with Lucy, Murphy the reporter, and Jane James's ex-wife and wife again. They really worked well together this time around. The murderers turned out to be the people that they least suspect. He had a really good way of hiding himself. Ending on a good note I love the way that James bonded with his ex-wife and his son that they got remarried. I love a happy ending.

Leonardo Galera _lera — This is a book that really stands the test of time. I loved it as a kid and recently revisited it as a source for a research paper I did on virtual museums. I love the details about the way the two kids handle the everyday-ness of running away!
