Kevin Brinkman kevinbrinkman — I thought this book was clever. It's told from the viewpoint of Doug, so the language is casual but authentic and the reader really gets to know him for who he is. There's no big plot or adventure, but it's just a good read. I recommend this book.

Amy Chan amywchan — I appreciate this book's perspective of female friendships, and the group of "girls" the author chose to write about. Their group is special, unique to their area of the United States, and interesting because of the number of girls in their friendship...10, or 11. I started out really liking how this story unfolded, how the girls became friends, why Ames, Iowa is so important to them. I appreciated their forty-year friendship, their differences, everything that made them..."the girls from Ames." Here's where it started to bother me...the author, for whatever reason, chose to really focus the story on three or four girls, one being the one who died. Marilyn's story is no doubt fascinating, and I loved the stories about her father, but the book really centered on her life. Marilyn, Kelly, Karla, and Sheila are about the most of the book...the others barely get a few pages. What about Angela, who came to the group later than the others? Do we get to learn her story? We learn the most about Sally in a heartbreaking memory of how mean girls can be. Jenny's life seems to unfold the most as she's an adult, not much of her as a girl in Ames, even though she is the one who gave the author the idea of writing the girls' story in the first place. I'm glad I read this book. I just wish the author didn't seem to rush the last half of it, at least that is how it seemed.
