User Design _ser_design — Really, that's 2.5 stars, mostly on the strength of the writing, which is often quite lovely, and Book One, the first third or so. As a story of failure, though, it is a failed story. As the characters' dissipation increases, the book's artistic cohesion dissipates, becoming scattered and episodic; scenes become less concentrated and resonant as the book proceeds. Rosemary, who gains our sympathy in the first section, ceases to exist thereafter except as a pale reflection of Dick; her appearance in Book Three is half-hearted and obligatory. Meanwhile, the shift in perspective towards the end, from Dick to Nicole, is neither illuminating nor moving, especially as Nicole is never all that interesting or sympathetic a character. I think that somewhere towards the middle Fitzgerald got as tired of this book as Dick did of his life, and that the moral failures of the protagonist parallel the artistic failures of the author.

Shaw Olivia yearnran — Great book, even if I first read it in the 7 grade. Its timeless.

Michael Vande _ande_ompel — Maitland just gets better and better. This is a fabulous read, with a tightly woven plot and a great array of characters. It's brutal and horrific in the extreme-but not gratuitosuly so. The characters are well depicted, with many of them showing compassion which contrasts with the life of the times, and the appalling attitudes of the lords of the manor. It's left very open ended, so am hoping with all my heart we will be seeing a sequel soon-it could even run to a series, there is so much potential left unexplored. 10/10 for this magnificent achievement.

Robinson Muñoz mutarodise3f10 — Since I haven't instinctual knowledge of what the "blanchings" and the "clarifyings" of cooking entail, I pull this book out practically every time I cook. It's sufficiently dumbed down...or perhaps I just mean thorough. The recipes are very good, and as it taught me how to poach an egg, it's also more useful than 95% of the books I've ever read. Highly recommended.
