kristyyspaa2ef
Kristy Pang kristyyspaa2ef — I originally picked this book up because of an excerpt I caught about how the author read, and I thought, "wow, that kind of sounds like the anal retentive way I read things!" I think the part that stuck with me the most was how Prose talked about how students read in some of the classes she taught. It was all about what the authors motives were instead of the words the author provided and the story. I suffered through this, especially with Kafka in World Literature a few years ago. The book breaks down quite a bit of literature I've never read. Plus side: I got more book recs! The other side: I was afraid I didn't get quite as much out of the examples as I could have if I had read the pieces beforehand. This isn't a book that has a lot to do with writing directly and I don't think much to do with learning how to write. It's geared toward classics (and maybe a few contemporary pieces). If I hated reading book excerpts, I wouldn't have liked this at all. And the entire book is excerpts, where Prose takes pieces of various works to show how authors formatted things to flesh out a story. My favorite sections were "Close Reading," "Words," and "Narration" and all of these occur very early on in the book, which says it all. Other sections the examples given lost me. Prose complimented a sentence I read over ten times and couldn't understand, saying that "careful readers would have no problem understand this." I think that means I've met my match in close-reading. Hee. I wish there had been nonfiction, too, since it was mentioned in the excerpt I read. But every one of the books explicated is fiction. There's a lot of wanking of the "greats" here, which is sort of the biggest disappoint for me because I expected, "This is why I think this works." and not "This works because Author A is great at writing amazing sentences."

ilovemarinaro
Jimmy Fraser ilovemarinaro — ** spoiler alert ** A few words can describe this book as I was reading this and after it was done. Disappointing, Weird, Ok, Funny and maybe Good. It was kind of all of that. I will start with the basics without giving away too much of the book. This happens about a year or so after Return, Luke is a General, which he doesn't want to be, but he is invistaging Mindor, where there are Imperials still. He gets in trouble and the whole gang (Han, Liea, Lando, Chewie, and Wedge, who seem to be in almost every book now) come to help out and save the day. There is a new bad guy, who is supposed to have more power then the Emperor, Vadar or Luke. If you want to know what happens I will let you read it. What I liked about it: Leia's, Chewie (He actually did more then just growl or hang out. He was fighting and was doing Wookie things) and Han's characters. They were pretty much from the movies we know and they hadn't changed (unlike the book The Courtship of Princess Leia, don't get me started...). Lando was ok in also. The story itself or how it flowed was ok. The comedy tone was good. What I didn't like about it: Luke's character. He was ok for the most part, but then at the end his comment that he didn't want to use his lightsaber or kill anyone anymore was dumb. There were a few other moments like that. Did Stover not read any of the other books that were written before him and set after his book? I get the whole peace thing, I am Jedi blah blah, but he sounded more like Superman. He was just wishing washing. His comedy tone was ok though. And I got the book because I sort of thought it was about Luke and maybe an adventure for himself, but the whole gang was there. Not that I mind it, but just wish the story was about him and maybe his quest on Jedi training or something. And for beign a Jedi it seems like Luke is always rescued by someone else. Maybe Stover watched too many of the episodes 1-3 or the Clone Wars, but I just wish Luke could kick butt for once. I haven't read all the ST's books, but I wish he just dominated in 1 of them. Just like I am Luke and bad guys are going to die. The character Nick was annoying after a while, he told too many jokes. There were the too many "I have a bad feeling about this. Don't tell me the odds, etc." Lastly, which is becoming a far too much trend in these books is that there is this person that is more powerful then the Emperor or Vadar. I get the galaxy is big, but for 1 book please don't make the bad try to be that way. If he was that powerful and such then why wasn't he there for the Battle at Endor with the Emperor? Just saying... I have a feeling Stover is going to do 2 more books that are like Luke Skywalker and the whatever as title. You will see in the book by it is called that. I guess he is trying to make a joke of things.

Van The thomas_nguyen — Oh, book. Why do you do this to me? You were so close to being awesome! The combination of Space! and Demons! was great and I enjoyed the characters and their interactions. I'd definitely read the rest of the series, if it existed yet. I was just thrown off by some of the mistakes in the book. The tense changes drove me crazy! I mean, sometimes it changed tense in the middle of a sentence! WHY??? There was also some grammar and word choice issues, but these weren't as annoying as the tense changes. Ok, so some of it was fairly predictable - I mean a guy with trust issues? Of course the woman is going to appear to betray him at some point. But some of the other plot elements I didn't see coming at all. Actually would have been nice if I had seen those coming - it seemed to wander a bit. But overall it made me laugh and it made me like the characters and it made me want to read the rest of them, so WIN!

agapeyev89
Volt Agapeyev agapeyev89 — A fantastic overview of post-World War II American cities. Teaford challenges a lot of assumptions about revitalization efforts that have become part of the conventional wisdom and that unfortunately still shape the way urban projects are planned. For one he shows that the supposed flood of federal money for "Urban Renewal" contained the 1949 Housing Act never materialized, and that most renewal activities involving eminent domain and site clearance were paid for and conducted by local cities at the behest of local interests even while federal money was on the table. He also shows that the assumption that post-war cities threw all their money into highways and forsook transit is just plain wrong. In most of 12 cities Teaford focuses on here, transit bond issues were often larger than highway bond issues throughout the 1950s and early 60s. And he shows that from the very inauguration of these programs there were oft-expressed concerns about displacement, and city governments acted to ameliorate the problems associated with them. This book's pages are occasionally filled with tables that deserve more anecdote and elaboration, but there is no other book out there that will give you a clearer picture of what happened to American cities during their darkest era.
