Mike Mann _c_creative — It's hard to review this book without turning it into some big, long, sloppy kissy love letter to Baldwin. This book does it for me on every single level and every single time. Baldwin does some of the most spectacular things with language and characters and he gives you all the details that you want to know about the characters. He lets them be real and make mistakes and be crazy and it's just so fantastic. Stylistically, this is is probably my favorite of his works.

SERIOUSLY. What i learned from this book is that Drawn & Quarterly will publish anything if they like your past work enough.

Karim Shaboury karimshaboury — I love this guy's in your face style. The title says it all, the "I'm not pretentious, so I'm going to go all out to make fun of myself". He can't, however, hide the fact that the writing is good. His bitterness at the loss of his mother hurts to read. His contempt for the people who gush because he does the right thing in raising his little brother, makes you want to temper your admiration for him. But not a lot.
