Mason Vance mvance212a8b — A few people who already got their hands on this book reached out to tell me—apropos of nothing—that it is so good. And now that I’ve read Daughter of Smoke and Bone by Laini Taylor I totally get it, because I will join all those readers and tell everyone I know, apropos of nothing, that this book is so good. Cuz lemme tell you: Perfect book is perfect. I don’t have enough good things to say about Daughter of Smoke and Bone. This won’t even be a coherent, well-thought-out review—it’s just gonna be a bunch of sentences of me gushing. Apologies in advance. There’s no real way to describe the plot so I’ll just give you the basics: Karou is a teenage art student living in Prague. She hangs out with some creatures who look like those toys your little brother plays with—the ones that let you attach a parrot’s head to the body of a lion. One of those creatures grants wishes. He does that by collecting teeth. Also, there’s an angel. I think that sums it all up. The most notable thing about DoSaB is that there is just so much story bursting from its pages. The novel is separated into three sections and just when we’re comfortably immersed in one world Taylor ushers us into another one, and her beautiful prose (in 3rd person, no less—such a delightful rarity these days) paints a picture for the reader rich with detail and color. Karou is our heroin and she kicks ass. She has all the makings of a main character who is too cool 4 school (blue hair, tattoos), but Karou’s the real deal. She’s tough, she’s strong, she’s vulnerable, she’s lonely, and she’s trying to figure out who she is. Literally—poor girl has no parents or legal documents. Of course, that gets answered as we start reaching the final section of the book. One of the great things about DoSaB is that it’s got so many intriguing mysteries—why does the wishmonger collect teeth? What do the tattoos on Karou’s palms mean?—and when you eventually get the answers to them they come with an oomph. Your reaction might range from “Ooooooh.” To “THAT IS SO BRILLIANT OMG!!1!” I’ve noticed that some readers felt the novel lags towards the end but I didn’t have a problem with that (in fact I think the final section was my favorite). The one problem I may have had was the romance. Not to say it was bad, but it did have a touch of standard predictability to it. The boy, of course is gorgeous. (Why is the boy always gorgeous?) And they fall in love, in like, a day. And there’s something that keeps them from touching too much (I wonder what would happen in YA literature if a boy and girl touched skin to skin and nothing happened.) Dimitris Rakopoulos rakopoulos — A LOT better than I ever expected. Gives both sides to the very serious story of the Wicked Witch of the West from Oz (even though no one knew there were 2 sides or that it was a serious story). Totally cool, especially if you ever really liked the Wizard of Oz story (either in print or on the screen, as a child or older person).
