One of my all time favorites. Let go of trying to "figure it out" and enjoy the story! One of the most poignant love stories ever!! (in my opinion, of course)

Freaks are people, too. Outrageous premise and a pretty dark tale, but I liked it.

light and quick to read. Each chapter has a recipe or tips on wedding planning which is kind of interesting and it's from these recipes that I decided to add cashews to my brownies (makes them quite tasty). I could have done without the occasionally overt Christian undertone but it wasn't enough to make me not want to finish reading, just made me roll my eyes.

Not as good as the first book in the series (called Spin), but still very interesting. Can't wait for the third one to come out this summer.
Much better compared to The Partner, yet not a masterpiece Grisham is capable of.

I couldn't put this one down. I like how a review on the back described it: "A brilliantly complex interrogation of our basic American assumptions. Anderson has created an alternative narrative of our national mythology, one that fascinates, appalls, condemns - and enthralls." It takes place in the years leading up to the American Revolution as seen through the eyes of the boy Octavian, and is not nearly as simple as that sounds. A thought provoking read.

It's hard to read this out loud to your child while you're crying.

A fine collection of essays from the short story author George Saunders. A nice variety between one and two-page thought bubbles (jokes) and 40+ page travelogue features (magazine articles). Saunders travels well and takes good notes, visiting Dubai, the US/Mexico border, and the town in Nepal where a boy has been meditating without food or water for seven months. Each piece is nicely observed and funny. My favorites are the articles about reading and writing. Saunders outs Esther Forbes' "Johnny Tremaine" as the book that made him (in second grade) understand the importance of crafting sentences; his reading of "Slaughterhouse-Five" while in the Sumatran jungle at age 23 reveals important literature that can also be funny and irreverent; Barthelme's "The Gerbil" is like a semester's worth of creative writing lecture boiled down to eight pages; and his introduction to a new edition of "Huckleberry Finn" made me want to go back and read that damn book all over again. Other short pieces (jokes) committed the minor crime of being insubstantial as non-fiction goes. "A Brief Study of the British," "Ask The Optmist!," and "A Survey of the Literature" could have easily been folded in amidst other short stories to good effect; on their own, they vanish in a puff of marshmallow smoke. Time spent with this book was well spent. However, it's never going to be re-read in the way that I re-read Mencken, Hunter Thompson, or Mike Royko for continued sustenance. If anything, it's closest to Vonnegut's non-fiction collections like "Wampeters, Foma, and Grandfalloons." (Conversely, Thompson's fiction won't stand the test of time that "In Persuasion Nation" does, so neener neener billygoat.)

Good and creepy. Will make you want to throw your cell phone out the window.
