I didn't feel like I came away with anything from this book.

Concise (unlike James Scott's Seeing Like a State), logical, and clear.

I read this book in grad school. Mainly because my advisor wrote it and I thought it would be a good idea to read it before my comps. No bias here but JO'T is a really good writer and weaves a good tale. The implications of which are- (1) what is race? (2) what role did the Catholic Church play in "passing for white"? It's the story of a big Irish family and the mother happens to be a former slave. As I recall, the book was constructed completely based on archival research (I don't think there were any interviews done). Great read.

A group of long time friends cope with the death of first one and then a second of their members.

Dry at times, but a truly inspiring read of an extraordinary woman who helped so many during the Holocaust.

Formulaic plot -- could see it being turned into a "National Treasure III". But I was very entertained by it -- made a good vacation read.

Would really give 3.5 stars. Not as good as "Bitter" but still quite funny. Will continue reading her memoirs, as who doesn't need a good laugh!
This was fun, though I thought I was not going to like it. So different from his other books. I really enjoyed the descriptions of Italy! And I was surprised that I was actually engaged in a story about football! The descriptions of food, though, were at times a little too much for me. It makes me question what I eat now.
This book was so good that I read it in one day. It takes place in October, in an old castle which Lori visits to assess a book collection. Reading about the rainy days on the moors, villagers who distrust the castle's new residents and Lori's first hand experience with a ghost haunting the castle made for a fun read that I could not put down. There was action from start to finish, beginning with Lori narrowly escaping death in a violent rain storm and Being nursed back to health by a stranger in a fishing cabin. This is a must read!
