Memoirs are not my usual reading material, but I was enthralled with this one. Anne, a recently divorced author with writer's block, and her widowed partner Ian buy an old house in Maryborough. To call it "a bit of a fixer-upper" would be an understatement. The house which was built in the late nineteenth century has seen better days; but it needs more than a lick of paint and some TLC. The house has foundation issues, huge cracks, electrical anomalies, and much more. Nevertheless, Anne and Ian painstakingly bring the home back to its former glory--and beyond. The arduous task of hand sanding the beautiful, original cedar trims and architraves is formidable. Anne has a knack for detail and decorating that made me green with envy. Her boldness with colour, her talent for snooping out treasures in antique markets, and especially her ability to envision the end result are admirable. Throughout the story, the couple find they might not be the home's only occupants. This fear is fuelled by the townsfolk's qualms about ghostly inhabitants of the past. Some delivery people even refuse to enter! Both owners have to overcome their fear of being alone in the huge creaky house, and the occasional spooky encounter does not make this an easy task. Anne's healing from her devastating divorce mirrors the house's gradual restoration. When the house is complete, her desire to write, something that had withered in the aftermath of her divorce, returns. I look forward to finding some of her historical romances to read.
