This is an excellent modern locked room mystery. The tight plotting that was typical of the golden age of mysteries is here. However readers also get the three dimensioanl characterisation that is typical of our present age. This book was irresitable. A must read for mystery fans.

One of the most fun books I've ever read!!
Memoirs are not my usual reading material, but I was enthralled with this one. Anne, a recently divorced author with writer's block, and her widowed partner Ian buy an old house in Maryborough. To call it "a bit of a fixer-upper" would be an understatement. The house which was built in the late nineteenth century has seen better days; but it needs more than a lick of paint and some TLC. The house has foundation issues, huge cracks, electrical anomalies, and much more. Nevertheless, Anne and Ian painstakingly bring the home back to its former glory--and beyond. The arduous task of hand sanding the beautiful, original cedar trims and architraves is formidable. Anne has a knack for detail and decorating that made me green with envy. Her boldness with colour, her talent for snooping out treasures in antique markets, and especially her ability to envision the end result are admirable. Throughout the story, the couple find they might not be the home's only occupants. This fear is fuelled by the townsfolk's qualms about ghostly inhabitants of the past. Some delivery people even refuse to enter! Both owners have to overcome their fear of being alone in the huge creaky house, and the occasional spooky encounter does not make this an easy task. Anne's healing from her devastating divorce mirrors the house's gradual restoration. When the house is complete, her desire to write, something that had withered in the aftermath of her divorce, returns. I look forward to finding some of her historical romances to read.

It was eye opening and strange. I read it and couldnt help thinking "these people are just compleatly nuts" but I still loved them. I read this book because Im a fan of Kesey, and also when I heard that Neal Cassidy is in this novel I just had to read it. This book proves that truth is sometimes stranger then fiction. The thing about this book I didnt like was that it was a little too long. All the stories told are all very similar. They are on drugs in a bus and they are on drugs in Kesey's house. After awhile enven the craziest drug stories start to get old and repetitive.

I didn't have high expectations for this nonfiction story of a family who ends up adopting a slew of children from various countries. I guess I thought it would be kind of sappy, but it was quite entertaining and moving. Beware - it will have you at least momentarily thinking that it would be a good idea to board a plane and head to an Ethiopian orphanage.

Adam Dalgliesh is my hero! Any mystery by P. D. James is a good read -- even the recently published ones (she is in her 90's now)!

A Scientist achieves his goal of creating a miniature universe in a lab. But not only are galaxies, stars and planets formed but life establishes itself in this universe. The Scientist, who has been an atheist all his life, gradually questions his views on creation. I enjoyed this book which raised questions of science, creation, evolution and religion.
