Throughout the adventure, Ten Silver Coin's overarching theme seems to be about giving a voice to the voiceless, and hope to the hopeless, a carryover from the author's active involvement with non-profit organizations addressing social injustices across the globe. The first novel in a trilogy of Jill Strong adventures, Ten Silver Coins is an excellent tale of second chances and acceptance, no matter where you come from or what your past may be. I picked up his book at the Malaysian book launch in Penang - a fitting place to launch the book, as it was mainly written in Penang during his stint with the Youth with a Mission (YWAM) base here. To my surprise, some Malaysian flavour seems to have found its way into the story, such as the naming of a Dryling guard as 'Cendol', a sweet Malaysian dessert. Although I enjoyed the book thoroughly, a slight minus point in this debut novel is the abundance of typing errors that litter the book, making the inner editor in me shiver in despair. (Fix it for the next printing, please?) "Between Heaven and Hell" is an imaginary conversation among President John F. Kennedy, Aldous Huxley and C.S. Lewis, each of whom died on Nov. 22, 1963. These three men, Kreeft says, represent the three most influential worldviews in human history: Western theism (Lewis), modern Western humanism (Kennedy) and Eastern pantheism (Huxley). What if they had encountered each other shortly after their deaths? How might their dialogue have gone? The book is a transcription of that conversation as Kreeft imagines it. It's a clever idea, and it works to an extent. It's limited by a couple of factors: 1. One suspects that the real conversation would have been so much livelier and better than anyone could imagine it. 2. The author gets to decide how the conversation goes. In essence, it's a conversation among Kennedy, Lewis and Huxley with a controller who really determines all that is said. Nonetheless, it's an enjoyable read. It hits meaty and important subjects -- lightly. This time through, I got a better understanding of textual criticism than I've had before.I won't go into what I think I learned here, but I'd be glad to discuss it with anyone who would like to.
