By finishing Emma, I have read six major novels from miss Austen this year (anyone, congratulate me? :D). I am glad to close this literary adventure by getting to know the ever so charming, Mr. Knightley. To be frank, he’s the reason why I kept on reading Emma. And maybe Miss Austen was right when she said that only she alone would like Emma. I am not fond of Emma since she seems really eager to match this Mr. with that Miss. Miss Woodhouse, you cannot control human’s hearts that easily. However, that’s Emma’s mistake, and we learn how she learns and grows from it. For that, I must give two thumbs for Emma’s characterization. Miss Austen has done well in building her character. Oh how I envy you, Emma, for having Mr. Knightley! Not like the love story in Mansfield Park, in which Edmund in more or less 2 pages suddenly wants to marry Fanny, we see how the love grows between Emma and Mr. Knightley. How Emma finally sees who’s the man who can bring out the best from her, it is believable. For a spoiled rich girl like Emma, a rough and critical gentleman like Mr. Knightley is the perfect choice, no doubt for that. The early parts of Emma are fascinating, yet the middle parts are quite slow-paced for my taste. Too many long dialogs and dancing scenes. I know that the dancing scenes are vital to the main plot, yet it’s too much for me. I had to struggle extra hard to be able to finally finish the novel. I must say that Emma is one of the best from Austen and I can understand how it has stolen many readers’ heart. Its exploration of human’s hearts and emotions is elegantly delivered. Yet it’s not a kind of novel that I will read it again and again.
