A book with action, adventure mystery and a great sense of humour. Every thing you need in a book right here.
F&Z is a novel in two parts. In the first, Franny Glass goes to visit Boston and has lunch with her boyfriend--who she now considers to be pretentious. In addition, she is becoming increasingly disillusioned with society's inauthentic and selfish behavior. As she goes through a very centering religious experience (which is so fascinating) of speaking a prayer so that it almost becomes a heartbeat, Salinger brilliantly complicates the tone. He is so gifted at the power of suggestion. I want to have the book Franny has, I want her meal, her cigarette, her messed-up family. Ironically, it is all these things she HAS that Salinger is cleverly satirizing... The second part is where Zooey Glass (Franny's older brother)deals a lot more with the interworkings of the Glass parents, how they raised their kids...and what each child is doing as an adult raised in such a unique environment. Salinger is second to Nabokov for me in his accurate, enticing, and disturbing psychological portrayals of characters.
as dark a book as I have ever read - incredibly well written, but a struggle to finish

The book is surely one of the very thought provoking ones during the partition era. The writing stlye of book is very straight forward and the essence of all the characters can be felt easily. The massacares and the horrifying consequencies are the most heart quenching parts of this book. It is still hard to believe that human nature is so volatile that even a little spark of revenge can can cause the wildfires of hatred and rivers of blood. The books shows how the people are motivated by religion for either good or bad. This is the very basic problem of most of the ongoing conflicts even in the today's world. But the book gives a very deep insight of the times during the partition and most of the scenes were actually a reality. The book has left us thinking whether we have improved or gone worse. Besides this, the book explores the common lifestyle of the far-flung Indian villages before 1947, where everyone was neglected part of the fast growing world. Life was slow and chaotic. Surely, we have come a long way surely.

Elizabeth Becker, as a correspondent for the Washington Post had spent a great deal of time in Cambodia before the Khymer Rouge came to power. This book is her fascinating history of the political machinations of their most public figures within the last century. The horrors of the Khymer Rouge regime are here as well with some personal stories of people Ms. Becker knew to add a human touch to a larger story.

It was good, but to be honest I expected more from Joan Didion.
one of my favorite series. Read for black diamond book club in 2003.
Very good book. Shows how ruthless lawyers can be to get what they want.

I thought this book was riveting on many levels. I especially like how this author develops her characters. I enjoy the controversial issues she picks for her books and appreciate all of her research. I thought this book was great. I could have done without this particular ending though.
I've read The Devil... and Thunderstruck. I really enjoy his works. This is a book of of interest for anyone who wonders why someone didn't see the Holocaust and Hitler's tyranny developing.
