Cassie is nearly thirty and a widow. Her dyslexia has made her life difficult and led people, including her late unlamented loser husband, to consider her dumb. She is, instead, a woman with a lively mind and a peaceful and mystical connection to the wildness of the land. Living with her hippie widowed mother in Topango Canyon with her companion parrot, Sam, Cassie struggles to make her way in the world. She lies on her resume and gets a job as assistant to two faculty. In her struggle to cover up the truth about her college years, she learns more and becomes more confident and self-assured. In a series of backwards and forwards movements, she finds her footing in the world and then success and happiness. Filled with her wry observations, this book never loses optimism and hope. It isn't a struggle so much as an interesting puzzle that she greets with wonder and practicality. There's sorrow, anger, happiness, accomplishment, and wonderful writing in this book. Not chick lit, not pretentious literary fiction, but a loving optimistic story of a hard-knock heroine who finds happiness and more.

This book was actually well-written - one of those books where you are compelled to read more, but it also covers some really sad/kind of gross topics and I thought it was a little much for me!
For college literature concentrators only.

Useful overview and reference tool for teachers wanting to create a more inclusive classroom. Has some relevant information about creating Individual Learning Plans which I found particularly helpful.

This book is about the sort of people I would like to meet. They live life so thoroughly and without fear of being judged. I love that there are snippets of the different lives being led.
A classic.
FINALLY. I was so hesitant to start this book because the size of it scared me a little. I've seen the first season of the show, but I don't remember it very well, so I didn't have much to compare the book to. It took me a while to get into, because there are so many different characters and plot lines going on. The introductions for each of those characters and settings took up so much time that I felt the overall plot was very slow. It wasn't until near the end of the book that I became interested in the plot. Because of that, it took me forever to get through this. I preferred certain characters over others, so when it wasn't their chapter, I was less interested and it took a lot longer for me to get through. It also took a long time before each of the smaller plots started to entwine to make for an interesting story. I loved the writing and how well Martin could transport the reader back to a certain time frame. I'm anxious to start reading the second book because of this ending.
