I went well past the 50-page mark, trying to give this book a chance to get going. But I'm no longer compelled.

Whoa. This novel by Karin Slaughter had me cativated in a way I hadn't with her novels yet. Kisscut is not for the faint of heart, the subject matter is deep and dark, yet very real. Not only does Slaughter weave her plot through society's darkest crime with unyeilding detail, she goes deeper than ever before into the lives of the characters she has built in this series. Such a well developed novel that had me thinking well after I had finshed reading. Thought provoking, dramatic, and exposing. Slaughter has the guts to tell this story, do you have the guts to read it?

Rereading in a new context. Already a known quantity in the world of post-modernism in American Christianity, Carol Howard Merritt has published her second book Reframing Hope: Vital Ministry in a New Generation. This is not a rehash of her previous work. Rather it builds and expands on it. In Tribal Church, Merritt was primarily concerned with "Where are the young people? What do they want?" In Reframing Hope, she emphasizes the need to stay grounded in the traditions of our mainline churches, while looking for additional ways to "be Church". She encourages us to quit obsessing about the numbers decline in our denominations and instead to "shift our focus, take into account where we have been, and imagine what God is calling us to be." The changing currents in "technology, organizing, communication, and spirituality...deeply affect the way we minister and form community." We can make two mistakes in dealing with this societal change. We can ignore what is coming, or we can dismiss what has passed. Both of these options will lead to our eventual demise. But we have faith that God is doing something in the world right now. It is up to us to discern what that is and what our role is in bringing it about. Merritt discusses the opportunities available to us by redistributing authority, re-forming community, reexamining the medium (electronic communications), retelling the message, reinventing activism, renewing creation, and retraditioning spirituality. Using both biblical and personal examples and stories, she leads us to look again at our world and at our churches. As a 30-something pastor in a mainline urban church, she speaks with experience and insight into the needs, wants and desires of the world around us. This book, published by the Alban Institute, should be required reading for any church leader who is serious about discerning the church's mission and vision for the future.

A fun and silly story to read at bedtime. Except for the middle, the book has very somber, quiet pictures and sleepy people and things. I can see this book being useful to help a child get her wiggles out and then settle down for bedtime. The deep blues and sepia tones lend themselves to a quiet, sleepy mood. We enjoyed reading this book together and we've read it a few times.

This is the book that changed my life - prompting me to quit my job as an advertising copywriter and write fiction, instead.

This covers the time in P & P when Darcy is absent from Elizabeth's sphere. Aidan uses it to good effect, allowing Darcy to be seen in his own right as brother to Georgiana, a caring relative to his Fitzwilliam/ Matlock relations, master of Pemberley and man trying to decide between his desires for his future and what he knows is his expected duty. Religion plays a bigger role as the novel progresses. Darcy is distressed by Georgiana's "enthusiasm" and is afraid that she will be exposed to the censure of "Society" for it, which reveals much about his own faith. Then comes Aidan's foray into the Gothic novel when Darcy, in an attempt to forget Elizabeth and find a suitable wife, attends a house party at the home of an old classmate. There he fast learns to despise his companions and the class of Society of which they are representative. As Aidan says herself in the Q&A: "The other goal was to bring Darcy to an epiphany about the nature of his own class, thereby providing him something to choose against in contrast to what, in Elizabeth Bennet, he would be choosing for." Fletcher again shines in this novel. He is such a fun character. My fav. part is when he tells Darcy that he is engaged to Annie Garlick and Darcy gives his assent, but tells him that he'll have to help Annie's mistress find a husband before then can be wed, little realizing that he has just told Fletcher to help Elizabeth Bennet get a husband. Ah, and the grin Fletcher has on his face:) Several times, Fletcher lets slip comments that clearly indicate that he already is sure that Elizabeth Bennet should be Darcy's wife...
