Continues with the multi-tiered cliffhanger adventure story from the prequel Hyperion but adds the additional perspective of space opera-esque interstellar politics and war, revelations about the greater universe around the main characters, and ultimately leading to drastic changes for humanity. I really liked the first half, offering conclusion for many of the first book character stories while building anticipation for prophesied conflagration. Sadly I was disappointed with how that conflict played out, finding too much of it and its implications drifting out of science fiction into more ambiguous fantasy. By the end the great cosmic unknowns hinted at throughout the two novels are all too quickly cast in abstract or split into other vague constructs. Granted, Dan Simmons' writing here is clearly more fantasy and poetry than science, but the attempts to exposit concepts like gods and time with physics and space would have been better left to the imagination, as they were in the first book and earlier half of this book. Perhaps it is a bias resulting from my different perspective on technology, thanks to the 20 years between my reading and Simmons' writing, but I was not with the author in his philosophizing about humans and their relationship with technology. As such the climax of the book did not hold the awe or surprise I believe he wished to engender, my interest already disengaged from the preceding unconvincing fuzziness. The book is mostly a decent page-turner nonetheless, and I enjoyed the suspenseful order of events. Final notes: This refers to the 2008 Audible audiobook, very well read by Victor Bevine. Also, without revealing too much, if you identify with the poet John Keats you will probably like this book.
