I have never read a book by Cynthia Eden before. Honestly, I had never heard of her until I saw a giveaway for this book here on goodreads, as well as a few blogs. From the description, it sounds like a book (a series)I would enjoy, so I decided to enter . Lucky me! I won a copy! Not only that, but by entering this giveaway, I learned of Cynthia Eden. I realized this is the 3rd in a series, but have been unsuccessful in locating the first two in the series. I hope to find and read them before this book arrives. If not, I hope it reads well as a stand alone!

I am still debating whether or not I should have given this three stars. I think 3.5 would have been great but I find myself still thinking about this book so maybe it does deserve four stars. A sweeping story set over 30 years about a woman named Delia and her posterity. Delia is 18 at the start of the novel and the new wife of Lord Conisborough. She is a rowdy American and quickly falls into life as a rich aristocrat in London. The story is in parts and each parts highlights the life of a particular character all while still keeping your abreast of the others. I liked this book. I found the characters to be enjoyable and the story, set during WWI to the start of WWII, to be quite interesting. A lot of the story is set in Cairo and I loved reading about its role in getting ready for WWII. I think my only complaint about this book is the brevity in which some incidents are just glossed over. Like one character is introduced to a certain male and in the next paragraph is marrying him. I guess the author had to fast forward through their lives at times to get everything in she wanted. I mean she does focus on five different characters and 30 years. So, I am reconciling myself to abruptness I felt at times. Overall, I really enjoyed this. I mean I read all 425 pages in about two days and that is something with two kids. I MUST have really enjoyed it. That or I have no more TV shows to watch!

David Thomson is quite a prolific critic. Why he put his considerable talent towards this book is beyond me. There are some quite sharp observations about celebrity and stardom in here. But the authors' fantasies about Kidman will make most cringe.

I thought this book was wonderful. I haven't seen the movie, but I can't imagine it does justice to the book.

I used to see Sandman comics around and I'd immediately become fixated on the covers. They were always so beautiful. Then I'd flip open the comic and discover that the inside looked nothing like the outside and I would put it right back down, never going any further. I can't even tell you how many times that happened. Later, as I became a little more aware of how comics worked (insides never look like outsides) and as I read other stuff by Neil Gaiman, I'd think about reading the Sandman comics but rounding them up seemed impossible and tedious. The combination of the library and the release of the Absolute Sandman volumes really solved my problems. I flew through all four volumes and loved every minute of it. The later issues especially have amazing artwork and the story is completely compelling. I recommend the books highly but be warned- they are HUGE and heavy. Not to be lugged around.
Very funny and very blunt, however, it had moments of pointlessness. There were a few instances where to tie the threads in, the story gets a little cliched and made me roll my eyes. For a first effort at a novel from Dawn French though, I thought it was good. Good, not great. A lot of the book relied on shocking language which despite being very amusing seemed designed to appall as much of her projected readership as possible.
