Such a great book, and even better than the movie (nothing new about that... there's just no way to put it all in.)

Parts of it were good, but I wanted to like it more than I actually did. Premise was great, execution was so-so.
This book kept me reading until the end, but I found it difficult (to say the least) to get through the long, multi-chapter discussion about the politics of the time, religion and the conflict between the Turks and the Serbs. On a different point, I wasn't a huge fan of Anna Karenina either. I think this book could have been edited a lot better.

I am now on a Dennis Lahane kick after reading his latest novel which I gave a perfect five stars. I love his writing style and it was a completely different style than "Mystic River" which was another one of his books that I liked..But that says a lot about an author to go through so many genres and ace every single one of them that he has tried his hand in. Anyways I just ordered three of his books, plus a Burroughs, so I'll have updates on them soon....still tackling John Steinbacks "East of Eden" right now, I am right in the middle of it. Its looking like it may get the prestigious 5 star so far???We'll see, endings can make or break a book, so far so good though....Okay I will quit rambling now especially since only the first sentence had to do with "Sacred". Bye
Very interesting and worth reading, but difficult to enjoy.

This is one of my favorite books of all time. The writing is so descriptive you feel every emotion along with her.
Just as good as the first one. So very good.

This book is highly overrated. A doctor's wife goes into labor in a snowstorm. It is a difficult labor, and she is anesthetized. The baby is born with Down's Syndrome, so the doctor makes a decision to tell his wife it was born dead so as to "protect" her from the "tragedy". His nurse is told to take the baby to an orphanage, but instead, she keeps the baby herself and moves away. I expected an intricate study of complex human emotions, but instead I just got one single-minded doctor who suspects he may have made a mistake, but never attempts to make it right because of what it might cost him. Of course, it costs him in other ways instead. The author did not do a good job of convincing me that the doctor was anything but completely selfish, so the main character remains one-dimensional. The reader barely gets to know his wife, making the parallel story of the baby growing up the best part although it lacks any true storyline. Ultimately, I felt this story was extremely sad, and failed to evoke any other emotion in me that would make me care much about any of the characters. Why this book is now so popular is beyond my comprehension.
