I really enjoy Rothfuss' prose, but I can't help thinking he's bitten off more than he can chew here. Given the progress made in the flashback portion of the plot during this second volume, it's hard to imagine the story being finished in only one more book. That is to say nothing of the present day story of Kvothe as the humble innkeeper in a world falling apart. I suspect that like A Song of Ice and Fire and the Wheel of Time series, this series is unlikely to end soon or succinctly. As such, I have a hard time recommending these books to anyone unwilling to persevere through the long-windedness of this particular volume, and the inevitable years to come before this story concludes.
I thought the premise was a lot better than the execution. It started out well enough but as the pages went by the book got more and more boring. It was all I could do to finish it. Predictable plots and cardboard characters. I will not be reading anymore of the series.

Running away from an arranged marriage to a fat, old man, Solie is captured by King Alcor's soldiers. She is to be used as bait to lure a prized battle sylph through the portal for the king's only son. Instead of being a sacrifice, Solie winds up being bound to the young battler, because she was the first to name him. When he first heard his name called, "Heyou" knew he was gazing upon his queen, and he would defend her to his death. After leaving the chamber in ruins, and killing Solie's attackers, Heyou takes Solie and flees to safety. Only there is very little safety to be found in this treacherous, barbaric land. I was extremely surprised by how much I loved this book. This is not my type of normal selection at all, but I was mesmerized by the cover, so I said "Go, ahead. Give it a try." That try turned into a reading marathon, in which I gorged myself on the first three books of the series, almost non-stop. Solie started out as your pretty average village girl. She was a little young for my taste (17), but back in those days, you died young, so it was best to live your life as soon as possible. She was being forced to marry a man her father wanted to curry favor with. Luckily her aunt was an independent, free thinking woman, who had taught Solie the same values. I really liked Solie's character for her spunk and snark attitude. She did at times act like a giggly teenager, but that's what she is in this book. Heyou has turned out to be one of my favorite characters. He is innately fierce and protective, but he is also very young for a battler. He is at times scared and uncertain. His biggest advantage though, is that Solie designs his appearance from the ground up. Sylphs come through the portal in a type of incorporeal form, that can be transformed into any shape. What a lucky girl! If that's not the best thing ever I just don't know what is. In the sylph world, a hive mentality is very much the norm, and males serve and adore their queen. This world just keeps getting better and better. It is a completely matriarchal society. Nirvana! Then they come to this side of the portal and ewwww! Women are more or less chattel. That's not right, let's fix it. This book is an epic read that I encourage everyone, no matter your genre preferences ,to read. The cast of diverse characters, human and sylph alike, and their journey to find a life that is fair and free from slavery and abuse, is one of the most entertaining and enjoyable ensembles you will find on a book shelf. The action is non-stop. The reader goes to peaks and valleys of emotion that will leave you breathless. I will be updating you on the journey of the sylphs and their human counterparts. It was a journey I plan on taking many times. I hope you join me.
PostSecret is an amazing project that has been great to see grow over time into one of the most read blogs on the internet, as well as 4 (with a 5th on the way) extremely well put together books.

From Library Journal Completed shortly before anthropologist-shaman Castaneda's death in April 1998, this book serves as the fulfillment of a task his teacher, the Yaqui Indian sorcerer Don Juan Matus, gave him many years ago, when Castaneda was instructed to collect the significant events of his life. This was not, however, meant as a collection of major milestones in his physical existence but as a selective work describing the transcendent moments and meaningful insights that changed his life and brought him new understanding. Castaneda excels as a storyteller. Incidents both poignant and empowering form a solid thread through his shamanic development and ultimately total embrace of the world view of the Yaqui sorcerers. This basically autobiographical work is more personal than Castaneda's previous books, presenting a human portrait of a remote, mysterious figure. The supernatural occurrences defy explanation yet help to provide a fascinating look at a complex life.

2 1/2 stars I liked that it was a no-brainer, fun novel. I didn't like how cheesy & predictable some parts were. I don't feel like a person can honestly change as much as Darcy did. So my opinion of Giffin as the author went down.
I loved this book!!

This is a fast read (well, not really for me because I am a slow reader, but my dad read it in one day). It's a neat story, with a couple of light-hearted twists.
This was a fun, light-hearted romp that wasn't exactly historically accurate in the way the characters were portrayed or behaved, but the smart dialogue and engaging characters kept me interested and entertained. All Emily wants to do is find love and start a family, but overprotective Daddy won't let her out of the castle, or allow any suitable suitors inside, since his wife and two daughters died years ago while in the family way. Instead, Daddy has started a feud with his neighbor, the noble and handsome and highly misunderstood Draven de Montague, Earl of Ravenswood, whose name just oozes tall, dark, handsome, and emotionally damaged. Daddy and Draven come to blows, King Henry II intervenes, Emily is given to Draven's keeping to cool things off between the combatants. Except, of course, Draven and Emily like each other. A lot. Emily, of course, with one ear to her biological clock, launches an all-out pursuit of Draven. And Draven, because of that emotional damage mentioned earlier, does everything he can to avoid Emily's charms. This one is enjoyable and recommended, and I will definitely be pursuing the rest of the series. Well done.
I've read this but i wana read it again because i forgot everything that happened in this book.
