It's kind of an irritating book.

** spoiler alert ** 3.5 out of 5. Beth is wonderfully feisty and I was really into the whole story at first, but it started to lose me near the end. It became pretty boring and there was so much freaking melodrama. All of a sudden, the characters who hadn't turned out to be closet gays or lesbians were secretly keeping violent sex slaves, for heaven's sake, and then there were stabbings and murders and never-ending fevers, not to mention the discovery of vengeful new relatives, and - yeah - this was my face: o_O It was all too much after a point. Over-the-top *CAN* work, but Jennifer Ashley's writing - although occasionally amusing - is just a little too dry to pull all the crazy off. Which brings me to Ian. I started off TOTALLY into his character. I felt so sorry for him and was looking forward to his getting a happy ending, as I should have been, but then I realized that all of the Mackenzies - Ian included - are kind of asshole-y. They're rude and arrogant and controlling to the point where I was all about Beth hoofing it back to London and cavorting in the slums. As for Isabella?! Yeah, I get where she's coming from. And I especially don't like Hart. Ugh. Super mega asshole alert.

Highsmith is another of my favorite writers. She had an unsettling morbid streak and could write an evil protaganist better than anybody, but she always did it with humanity and humor. The Ripley books are all over the map in terms of quality, but the first one is undeniably great. Forget the movie!

Genna and Dan are desparate. Their father has disappeared - most likely dead - their mother is succombing to the same illness that caused him to wander off and Genna especially doesn't like the way Uncle Banris eyes her while begging her mother to marry him. They have to find a way to save their mother before she dies. So an illicit midnight jaunt to gather magic leads to a meeting and pact with the Kai-lord. Now they must fulfill their end of the pact before the kai-lord kills them an all they love.
Reading this over Spring Break was probably a mistake.

The Zelig-like story of a fictional robot and his role in late 19th-early 20th century American and world history, Boilerplate is not a quick read; it's set up like a history textbook or a coffee table book, more something to dip into. But the careful and thorough detail, both visual and historical, makes for an exceptionally rewarding read.
ABSOLUTELY FANTASTIC BOOK! In my Top 10 Read List. Recommend it to any one of any faith (or any lack of faith).

I thought it was going to be about her experience teaching English literature to a select group of Iranian young women...instead it was an autobiography of her experience as a woman teacher in Iran, loosel anchored by her young students.
Overall, I liked this book. However, I never quite felt like the two narratives managed to make it into a cohesive story. I guessed quite early what was going on, and I spent most of the rest of the book feeling somewhat frustrated. I’d be interested to see if others had a different reaction. [March 2011]
