a fascinating memoir about a murder obsessed guy. he uses these punchy staccato sentences and weird hybrid lingo that i love. it's not cliche like he's trying to exorices his demons, but more like he's trying to enliven his obsession in you. so far i've liked this far better than any of his fiction.

Ms. George is such a fine writer. Grim, yes; dark, yes; but she has an understated insight into the nuances of her characters that keeps me reading. This is also a long book, but worthy for those who admire great story tellling and intricate plotting.

Incredible. This book makes autism so much more real, and so much more understandable. It's interesting to notice some of the characteristics that most of us have, which are simply exaggerated in autistm. I also think it's fascinating how this condition, essentially a social disorder, is so much more disabling than most physical illnesses, or even mental illnesses such as mood disorders. Humans thrive on social contact, and lacking that ability is devastating.

Really fascinating look at one of the U.S.'s "unincorporated territories" and the power of archives in memory and history, especially within the post-colonial sphere of study.

Not sure how I feel about this one. It's one of those books that I'm enjoying more now that I've finished than while I was reading it. Is this a sign of relief or appreciation? Regardless, it's a lot to chew on - different time periods, a number of characters, multiple perspectives, the Depression, World World I, the KKK, Orphan Trains, Prohibition. I'm just not sure what kid would read this book and absorb and enjoy it (so much of it is adults talking), especially if this adult reader had difficulties keeping things straight. And while juggling all of these elements, Vanderpool seems to sacrifice interesting characters (the protagonist Abilene is a bit blah and her portions drag) and, at times, logic -- having a mystery for mystery's sake. No one in town wouldn't really tell Abilene about her dad??? Just how powerful is Miss Sadie's divining powers? Towards the end, it's referred to as more an intuition, but then she conjures up a flashback within a flashback? I don't know. "A" for effort, but Newbery-worthy? I think not.

A wonderful collection of short stories, ranging in topic from dead marriages to death. Many of the stories you will finish and wish that the author wrote a follow up novel for the characters.
