A fine wartime, political thriller with a little bit of a human touch. The part reserved to the Resistance is particularly enthralling in that Humes is successful in depicting the isolation these guerilla fighters must have felt. While they were free to roam the countryside, it was always as anonymous citizens...this anonymity semmed maddening at times. It serves to underscore the depth of their conviction, even though history has taught that were on the just side, this conviction, in any warrior, seems somewhat noble. The postwar scenes are at times bloated with political philosophy, but still the intrigue behind these philosophies prevents the novel from bogging down. As for characters, I thought that John Stone was a character of enormous depth. There is never really a breaking point, just an accumulation of experience that ultimately breaks him. The same goes for Alexi Carnot. Overall, I thought that this novel was successful on everything it aims for except for the character of Ambassador Sheppard. We are left to wonder why he was to be viewed as a great man. I'm sure that Humes was trying to portray him as a last bastion to a noble America that was to disappear and be swallowed up by Red paranoia, but I just felt that there was not an action that he undertook that ennobled him. Perhaps this was his final desperation and he had no choice but to commit suicide.
Similar to Gladwell's "Outliers" in topic, but covers different people and methods. I liked the author's argument that it's the hours of deliberate practice that matters with successful people. Makes sense.
Another book more for Tolkien nerds than actually role-playing. You can't ACTUALLY work Gandolf or any of the other Maiar into your campaign, let alone the Valar. But its fun to read stats that are so insanely high.

One of the better presented science books for kids that I've read. I learned a lot, and I think I'm going to remember more of what I learned because it was organized so well. The pictures were a nice mix of appropriate photographs and helpful graphics.
I took the opportunity to read this again quite recently, and in a lot of ways, this book holds up even better the second time around. I'm looking forward to reading it again in the near future. And while I do love Rachel McAdams, I also think she's slightly miscast as the titular character in the upcoming film (while Eric Bana is close to perfect). I'll probably watch it anyway.

I was sent this book to read by the author. Being a complete departure from her usual style, I was keen to see how she handled it and the subject matter. I was not disappointed. The story was compelling. I felt sympathy for Immy, her life and the choices she was forced to make. At times I wanted to hug her then, in the next breath I felt annoyed that she was prepared to put up with the circumstances. I was glad that she stood up for herself at the end, though the decision was undoubtedly tough. Degarmo has handled the interwoven concepts in the story with sensitivity and maturity, though I was sad that the ending didnt have more of a decisive end. But that's just me... I like closure. Well worth the read!!! Just bring the tissues.
Loved it!
I'd like a dog named Mr. Rochester.
I LOVE this book. It has been one of my all time favorites since I read it when I was 14. I have searched for years to find a copy, finally did on line about 2 years ago. I was almost afraid to read it again, that it would not live up tho th ememory, but I loved it just as much the second time around. The Little Kingdom is a heartwarming, heartwrenching story of a little girl growing up on a ranch in Montana where her friends were ponies, geese and all the other animals she meets.
