I see a lot of objections in the reviews of this book to the "kidnapping" device of the story. Adults are having a big problem with the concept of kidnapping - but not the fantasy. I think we often stint on giving credit to children's intelligence. You only have to look at the cover of this book (with the giant eye of the Kraken and the mermaid) to see this is a book of fantasy. The first sentence tells you what you already know, that kidnapping children is not a good idea. Nor, I might add, is luring them away. The author has to find a way to get three children from their mundane or painful lives to another place. One of them has to be a mistake. No sane child who is old enough to read this would make the assumption that being kidnapped is a fun thing to have happen. The children in the book know what kidnapping is really about - it's about being tied up and awful things happening. They have been taught properly. But this is a book of fantasy where things don't happen as expected in real life. I think we need to let go of our adult sensibilities (we read murder mysteries, don't we, and we don't complain about people getting killed or tortured in them for our pleasure or it leading to readers who will go out and murder in real life) and enter this fantasy world that Ibbotson creates where there are nice people and not-nice people who do wicked things for what they think are good reasons and have silly opinions on "aristos" or men or whatever. Ibbotson's work is great fun to read. There's lots of imagination and gentle humor and they are slightly sillier than, say, Diana Wynne Jones's books. Another fantasy writer who would appall adults and raise the hairs on the necks of kids is John Bellairs.

Snail Mail, No More was a really good book describing how the relationship between two girls can do a lot. Though they are miles apart, as each one faces difficulties, the other helps through emails and in person.

The Washington Post Book World said, "A captivating story within a story, a first-rate study of class, gender and character, a courtroom drama and an un-put-downable page-turner." I agree - I LOVED this book. Anna is a young woman living in London at the turn of the century, confiding her thoughts and secrets only to her diary. Many years later, her granddaughter discovers the journals and embarks on a journey into her family history. Just delicious...

I'm actually re-reading The Wedding Planner and I can't believe I'd forgotten what an adorable story this is. Jordon Buck, in all of his confused angst, was nothing short of cute. I liked the way he didn't fail to see his fiance Fawn's shortcomings. He was annoyed with her but at the same time he didn't immediately blame her. He tried to see if he was part of the problem. I liked that he didn't immediately put all of the blame for the state of the relationship on someone else. Jordon's interactions with his brother Bryan were heartwarming. You could tell how much they loved each other and Jordon never once let Fawn talk crap about his brother or any other gay man. G.A. Hauser was so successful in making me believe that Jordon was, no matter how hard he tried to fight it, lost when it came to Tyler Holliday his wedding planner. Every time Jordon even thinks of Tyler it's like he's been lit on fire. Tyler Holliday was such a sympathetic character. A man who was still a kid when he started in the porn business and is now trying to break away from that part of his life. Usually, I wouldn't be rooting for two people to get together when one of those people is engaged to someone else. This story had me rooting for Tyler and Jordon from the time they meet in the restaurant to discuss the planning of Jordon's wedding. The sweetest thing ever is when they have a home cooked dinner and then watch the Olympics, all cuddled up on the couch together. I even wanted to squeeze the secondary characters. Jordon's brother Bryan knows from the very beginning that if Jordon gets married to Fawn it'll be a disaster. Bryan's not shy about saying it every chance he gets and joyfully calls his brother's fiance Bridezilla. Bryan is also smitten like a hormonal teenager with Tyler once he finds out that Tyler was an ex-pornstar. I thought it was hilarious that Bryan pretty much Myspace stalks Tyler. Adrian Tripp, Jordon's hot and promiscuous, gay co-worker is a sweetheart. He hits on Jordon every chance he gets. The scene where Jordon asks Adrian if Adrian truthfully finds him handsome...it was sexy but it also made my heart break a little for Adrian. He's a playful guy but his compliments are sincere and he really likes Jordon. I got the feeling that Adrian wanted Jordon for more than just friends with benefits. The number one reason why I adore this story is because the two characters fall in love before any sex happens. They spend time together, have conversations and relate to each other. At the end of the story I believed in the characters' HEA more than I have with any other book.

One of my favorite books I have read this past year! It's historical fiction taking place during WW I. There is occasional vulgarity but for the most part, clean. It was fascinating how he had characters from each country involved and you got almost every perspective. I'm still a little stumped as to why there was war at all (as were many of the characters)but I guess you could say that for almost every war in history. I did get a little tired of reading war stuff but this was around page 700 so it wasn't too bad, I guess. I highly recommend this book! My only real complaint is it was hard to read in bed since it's the size of Delaware :)

The Everything World's Religions book is a summery of most of the religions of the world today. This book summarizes each religion into a few pages in a comprehensive way. Each religion is divided up into denominations of that religion and each denomination is explained in a very understandable way. The book is written in chronological order, starting with Hinduism and ending with modern religions and philosophies such as Atheism and Agnosticism. This book delivers an accurate take on religions, and overall teaches a lot about religion as a whole. This book helped me see the similarities that all religions have which says a lot about why people practice religion.
I always love my favorite authors even more than the books they write. Charlotte is no exception. Her short life, as seen through her personal letters, is its own best love story.
a very good Shakespeare play. I have been in one as Egeus and Starveling. Hermia and Lysander plan to be secretly wed, only Puck puts a sleeping potion on Lysander's eyes. not going to say all of it, though.
I loved this book

reading now...and yes, grt poetic aha moments but the full thread of plot and character brilliance, I have yet to grasp. Over hyped, maybe. Over-done theme, maybe. But basically, I need to get off my ass and really read it instead of carrying it arnd in my bag every day. will let you know.
