This trilogy didn't grab me like the Darkest Powers trilogy did - I don't know why but still great reading! I was really glad to see both get wrapped up with a solid ending.

Though Clare's writing shows occasional flashes of brilliance, the characters in this book were so inconsistent as to seem schizophrenic, and the big plot twist was obvious a book ago. Yes, there are some really good story elements here that kept me hooked, but much of it was anticlimatic and disappointing. I can't help but finish this series, but then I think I'll wait until her writing matures.

Nice little book. Nice is such a yuck word. But, I can't say good. I liked it and am not sure why. Perhaps because it is honest and earnest and not trying to be more than it is. Good stories. So, ok, good little book. I would read more by her.

Intersting historical fiction of a healer
No, this isn't the story of that duck that wanted to be a swan. This is a play written by Mr. Winnie the Pooh himself called The Ugly Duckling. It is about a princess who was cursed at birth to look ordinary (or ugly) to everyone by her true love. Shannanigans and laughter ensue as she becomes engaged to a Prince who has never seen her before (but ironically is her true love unbenownst to her worried parents). I played the princess' dim-witted but beautiful servant, Dulcibella, presented by Live Theatre Workshop here in Tucson in the summer of 1996. This is a really great little play for children and young adult audiences in particular, but adults will get a kick out of it too.

It made me a little squeamish to read detailed, vivid accounts of brain surgery, anatomy- drilling holes in skulls and pulling back skin flaps, eek. However, this was an intriguing read, and didn't devolve into predictable territory of Woman Neurosurgeon in a Man's World very often. Cynically, I wonder if she'd have gotten published if she weren't so blonde and pretty.

The book indulges the rare niche of people who are intrigued by anthropology and murder mysteries. The story follows a US journalist who is introduced to an anthropologist imprisoned in a Thai jail for the murder of a missionary. Details unfold about their relationship with a fictional group in northern Thailand. The anthropologist sought to understand the group by immersing herself in their community. The missionaries sought to free them from oppression caused by their beliefs. Both paid high personal costs for their ambitions.

This is in no way scholarly or in-depth, and you won't learn much from it, but it's awesome fun, and Gladwell's writing is interesting: he takes known facts and spins them around, plays with them, links them to others, makes you see them in a new light. And he takes you along for the ride. This book is total brain playtime. I'd recommend this to anyone who hasn't already read it. For one thing, well, almost everyone has read it, so this will give you something to talk about the next time you're trapped in a small room with strangers.

It has been ages and ages since I read Little Black Sambo, and whie I know that it has been deemed politically incorrect, the very title being an insult, as a child I loved the Indian boy with his umbrella and the tigers chasing around the tree. I smile just thinking of all the colors in this little story.
