You always have to keep a watchful eye on Peter Lamborn Wilson. He is a trickster and a magician, and he is trying to sell you a beautiful dream. In exchange, he asks nothing more (or less) than that you take it into the core of your heart, make it your own dream, carry it with you while you build the future. I'm not implying that he is just making shit up. He maybe embroiders here and there, highlights one thread of the tale over others - no more than any official historian does, really. Manifest Destiny. Survival of The Fittest. Better Living Through Chemistry. These are all myths, less artfully presented, that we've been told to accept as truth. So when you are reading Pirate Utopias, bear all this in mind. It's well-researched, and clearly presented, and if he has an agenda, at least it's a gorgeous and tricky one. Here is a history of liberation, a legacy Wilson is telling us to embrace and reclaim. From his pirates we can learn how to build a future that actually works.

Should have read this when I was a kid. Was expecting genius. Instead I got bored and put it down.

Previous reviews suggest that this is very much a love it or hate it book, and reading through it, I can see why. There are things that frustrated me majorly: the two main examples were the constant playing with tenses (which, granted, I finally worked out was about reflecting the main character, Belinda's POV vs anyone else's); and the decision to have a world that's EXACTLY like Elizabethan Europe except that all the names (both country and monarch names) are different but still 100% recognisable as their real world counterparts. The frustration was then compounded by the lack of a map anywhere in the book, so in the first chapter, where the author was throwing country names at me thick and fast, I had no idea which collection of syllables referring to which country what until I got descriptions in later chapters of the major cities there, at which point it became obvious. That said, I did like Belinda as a heroine. She's another in a long line of powerful-but-broken heroines that just appeal to me; and I thought Ms Murphy did a good job of setting up how she became (or was made) so broken in the early chapters. And I also liked some of the B-characters and look forward to finding out more about them in the next book (which, yes, I intend to read since the library has a copy - I'm just not in any rush to do so) I can't honestly think of any one of my friends to whom I'd recommend this book wholeheartedly with the expectation they'd enjoy it - but at the same time, I didn't completely dislike it either. It is, I think, a hard book to categorise, let alone review.

Witty and enlighten. Although I have some different point of view with the writer, but wow... really unputdownable.
Nothing to do with the 2nd part. I hate it, in fact. All the atmosphere i've reached with the first came down. I mean, it's completely like any meyer's book. I guess what's coming in the last and next one...
Gabrielle Hamilton doesn't care one whit if you like her. She does, however, seem to care, and deeply, that you understand her. By the end of this honest, blistering, and very well written memoir the reader comes not only to understand, but indeed to like, and most certainly admire Hamilton through decades of struggle, reflection, and acts of self-sabotage. Five stars all the way.

What else can I say... I read this in a "Muslim Women of the World" class and almost threw up just reading it.
