I enjoyed reading about the Irish community in Scotland and loved the pre-Internet & cell phone newsroom scenes.

Precocious Clementine is back-better than ever! She has found a teacher who understands her and whose rules she knows and can easily follow. But then he's gone for a week with the prospect of him being gone for the rest of the year. Clementine finds herself in hot water with the substitute, whose rules she doesn't know ahead of time.

I read this book a long time ago and I know I loved it, I just couldn't remember the story at all. There are several books in this series so I wanted to reread it and then follow up with the rest of the books. I fell in love with all the characters all over again. A beautiful love story.

This little book is an add-on to Pullman's His Dark Materials series. The presentation is fantastic, and in the same style as Lyra's Oxford. It is a very small hardcover, about 100 pages long, with beautiful woodblock illustrations. It has a bunch of extra goodies inside: a shipping manifest, some notes between Lyra and her professors, a newspaper article. Instead of the fold-out map from Lyra's Oxford, there is a cool little fold-out boardgame featuring hot-air ballooners traveling to the north pole. The main difference between Once Upon a Time in the North and Lyra's Oxford, however, is that this book has a very compelling story. It features Lee Scoresby the aeronaut and Iorek Byrnison the armored bear decades before either meets Lyra. It's a good little yarn, full of action and adventure. It didn't take long to read it, especially since I wasn't able to put it down once I started. I'm a little sorry that I got it from the library instead of buying it. I don't want to return it.

Classic Haven Kimmel. I laughed, I (almost) cried, it became a part of me. Maybe it's because she's only a few years younger than me and I can totally relate to her world view as a 13 year old in the seventies... I don't know. But she has a style of writing that is, at once, charming and familiar. Her books get under my skin and stay with me for a long time - and that's a good thing.

4.5 stars Excellently written. In the beginning it was just confusing enough to intrigue without going overboard into incomprehensible. I also liked the idea of many different, parallel worlds. I've never found the muscle bound hero attractive. But somehow this author has made it seem like the coolest thing ever. That and long hair, which I've always hated too. I thi k that says something about CA that she can make a believer out of me. Really cool book.
