Before listening to this book, I admit my knowledge of Roberto Clemente was pretty limited: Clemente was a great right-fielder for the Pirates who had 3,000 hits when he died in a plane crash. This book, along with filling in the normal biographical details, described his struggle for respect as a player and as a person in the 50s and 60s. Reading a book knowing the main subject dies in the end, I didn't expect to have an emotional reaction, but hearing the details of the incompetence and negligence that allowed the death of this icon proved me wrong. At 38, there was not much left for him to accomplish on the field, but it's a shame we didn't get to see what else he could accomplish off the field.

Starts out a bit boring. As with most Victorian novels, it has the tendency to explain too much (which I don't like). Anyway, at least it gets better. The plot is starting to pick up now and Gwen is joy to read. Ehehehe

Battle Songs follows the fortunes of four young men from Pennsylvania who are drafted into the Korean War: Sam, Dick, Fran, and Ben. The author does as good a job of introducing the reader to 50s small-town life in Pennsylvaia (coal-mining towns) as he does to the horrors of the Korean War. Both prove to be fascinating subjects. The narration is detailed, nuanced, and poignant: "Very few people paid any attention to the inductees. . . . The young men were all old enough to remember the Second World War, when the newly drafted were paraded through the streets in broad daylight like heroes, not smuggled out through alleyways at night. People cheered as men left for the "big war" . . . . But when these youngsters left to fight in Korea in 1951, there was neither ceremony nor public sadness. They were simply taken away from life and noise and freedom to fight a war that people even then wanted to pretend did not exist, and that people now have either forgotten or never knew of to begin with." Several scenes have stayed with me--a big fight between a newcomer and a townie back in Pennsylvania, a sniper picking off the wounded as they are being transported to the hospital in Korea, a climb of Oku Hodaka, a 2,000-foot-high mountain in Japan, near where Sam has been assigned to a medical detachment. All in all, this book is well worth the read.

Mysteries certainly are a lot more thrilling when nobody can rely on cell phones to keep everyone apprised of the situation.

What book did I read? I read Anthem by Ayn Rand (student edition). This is a pretty good book. But it is also a pretty difficult book to read at the same time. Because the people like didn't have names there names were like a word and a bunch of numbers, but overall it was a pretty good book, but it had some romance which i'm not really into The main characters were mostly Equality 7-2521, Liberty 5-3000, Union 5-3992,and International 4-8818. And when every one is a kid they are at a student council and then once they get older they get put in to different groups and each group does a different job and are in the same place as every one else in there group. And its a sin for guys and girls to talk to each other and they break that rule, Equality 7-2521 talks to Liberty 5-3000. And in the beginning Equality 7-2521 and International 4-8818 found a dark hole and it was left from the Unmentionable times and its hundreds and hundreds of years old. And they are in like the dark ages in/of the future. The genre of this book would probably be romance, Greek mythology, spiritual, and just like a mix of different genres. I think there are two versions of this book there is a normal version and a student version, and this is not part of a series. I would recommend this book to people that like romance and people that like to read books that are "different"

Best. Cyberpunk. Ever. Yeah, the main plot makes zero sense, but the humor makes up for it.

What a super cute wonderful lovely book! I don't usually read books for this age group, but when I saw it was Melina Marchetta I knew I had to get my hands on it. So the book follows the story of Danny Griggs (brother of swoon-worthy cadet Jonah Griggs who just happens to be fighting a territory war in Jellicoe) during year 4 and Danny has his own battle to face. After losing his footie team's good luck charm he must face the Gorgon of the Gully in order to get it back. I have to say the work these kids put into the production just to get Danny down into that gully was quite comical. These kids are organized! While reading I just knew it wasn't going to end well, and surprise surprise when it didn't. But as with all Melina Marchetta books, even those for younger readers, the book isn't really about facing the Gorgon. It has more to do with facing your fears and finding those special friendships. The ones that are worth fighting for and have the potential to last a lifetime. And once again she writes it beautifully. A HUGE thank you to Carmel for sending me this lovely book all the way from Australia. I appreciate it more than I can say, and she started a Melina around the World group so her book (only released in Australia) is now travelling the world thanks to her and Catie. Well done friends. Well done!

To many of my friends this is their favorite book. I liked it alright and think its worth the read but don't consider it one of my favorites. Not sure why though...

Short and cute. I'd like to see her revisit this world sometime, although the base premise may not support a second story of any length--depends on just how big the Mythosphere is. I'd love to see her incorporate other cultures into the Mythosphere; I couldn't tell if she tried doing that in this book or whether the various incarnations were all re-interpretations of the same Greco-Roman stories.

If you described this book to me, it would sound like this would shoot to the top of a "my favorites" list. Post war Barcelona, "The Cemetery of Forgotten Books", a coming of age story exploring a mysterious and potentially mystical history, and a horrific stalker that shouldn't exist. The problem is that it played by the numbers, it was long and drawn out, the back story was dull, and there was a real sense of fear that the whole book was going to be as predictable as it was playing out. It was a huge disappointment and a real waste of time. There were some really finely executed scenes and he did a great job giving a sense of place. The characters were initially enjoyable, but the dialog was so awkward that you start to feel like they were just one note repeating; it felt like they were just saying the same thing over and over again. The kid's investigative powers were amazing, all he had to do was ask a conveniently perfect question and he would suddenly be invited into people's homes and offices with them confessing their entire history particular to the plot (unless, he would forget to ask the REALLY obvious questions that might clarify things a bit). What a letdown.
