"Connolly writes like a poet...his words sing." For once, a blurb on the book jacket turned out to be true. This novel owes quite a bit to C.S. Lewis' Narnia books. But the writing is lovely, and the plot is fittingly fairy-tale like in its simplicity. What's haunting and beautiful are the themes and their implications. We go deeper into the roots of fantasy in this book. Also, for a person with morbid fears and leanings like me, this book offers some comforting ideas and imagery.

I know I'm supposed to like Daniel Clowes' work, I do. He obviously has the chops, both as a scripter and artist, but I just can't deal with him. In this collection (which, to be fair, is mostly old filler strips, so we're not seeing him operating at his full potential) he tends to resort to easy gross-out gags and non-narrative screwball fantasies, which gets a bit old. He does have moments of insight, or at least perceptive wit ("Art School Confidential," "Ugly Girls"), but mostly the collection's a repetitive misanthropic diatribe. Right toward the end ("Eightball"), he does give a nod to the possibility that the world might not be totally shit, but honestly it's not enough to pick you up out of the mire. If you're already decided that ours is a crap world with no hope of redemption, you'll get no argument in Twentieth Century Eightball. But if you haven't yet decided that the entirety of humanity is a waste of biomass, you'll find the book to be angry, grating, and to be completely honest: sad.

My favorite book by one of my favorite authors. Irving's greatest strength is that, like Dickens, he is an amazing storyteller. His books are so quirky, detailed and interesting, full of odd twists and turns, but still with a lot of heart. Garp might be his best because it is more concise and more personal then some of his others. Twice I have lent this book to friends and twice it has dissappeared never to return, so I suspect other people like it too...

This is one of those books that people think is either totally brilliant or just annoying. As one can tell from the rating, I fall into the latter catergory. Maybe I just can't appreciate the genius of Heller's prose, but I prefer character developement and plot to rambling confusing anecdotes that go nowhere. War is a paradox. WE GET IT. Read for: 12th grade AP English

Fun for the kids. Has cute stories about money that kids can relate to. Good way to teach kids how to be responsible in a society that teaches irresponsibilty when it comes to money.

As a big fan of Sally Mann, I found this book really interesting to read. The idea of her controversial photographs was brought into a story between a dying mother and her daughter. The mother's character was a challanging one to become sympathetic to or even understand at times. However, as I was reading the novel, I became more and more interested in the challenges in which Mann and her daughters must have gone through over the years. All in all, it was a really beautiful story about the ever so complicated relationship between a mother and her daughter.
