This is an incredible book. I think it suffers a little from translation--passages and phrases sometimes feel both lovely and awkward at the same time. But the primary purpose of the book, to give a sense of the extent, political/social context and the great loss that's accompanied book destruction since the beginning of writing is tremendous. The major flaw is that there is no mention of sub-Saharan Africa, which seems a major omission. Still, this is a book I'm planning on buying, since I went back to read certain pieces many times.

After reading the Mortal Instrument series I had an idea what this book would hold. I loved going back in time with the shadow hunters but was a little unprepared for the blood and gore in the first part of this book. That is really my only big complaint. The book took awhile to really pick up and take off but I love the complexity of the characters. The writing is very well done but these books are a full anxty teen life. I wanted to read the second book as this one ended on a huge cliff hanger. Not cool.

One of the classics...took a little while to get into it, but I was reading it on my phone, which is not an ideal way to read. The last third of the book went fast and had some surprises.

Another excellent Saunders short story collection. "Bohemians" and "CommComm" alone are worth picking up the volume. In finishing In Persuasion Nation, I have now read all of his works, and for the first time, I felt I was being clubbed over the head with Saunders's critique of consumerism. Seems that most of his readers are already on board with that message, so why go over the top? I am indeed enamored with these themes and his treatment thereof, so perhaps I just missed the sensation of being clobbered previously.

Not as good as the first and I read it during the height of the controversy, pretty much.
You know, it's not like I really expect much from a novelization of a comic book...but they are usually pretty bad. This book was a surprise! I'm not a real big fan of the Dresden series, because I think it's sooooo formulaic. The jokes are just so...typical of that kind of plot. However, Butcher definitely tickled my funny bone in the guise of Peter Parker. He wrote him in the most believable voice! Plus, he emphasized the best element of the Spider-man culture: Peter Parker is a regular guy! The financial woes, the interaction with M.J. and the Black Cat...it's all so normal. Peter grapples with his own moral code and sense of justice, but it's no where near the personal torment of Superman and Batman. Peter's greatest struggle lies in his ability to juggle his life and the sacrifices he has to make to just keep everything going. Butcher really captures that sensation of being torn between being a superhero and just being a good husband or friend. After all, Spider-Man doesn't have superspeed or billions of dollars. He pretty much only has his wits. Unlike some of the actual comics, Butcher stays true to the essence of Spider-Man, and in turn, churns out a really enjoyable book.
