And no one is as they seem. And when Adam tried to get out, the crap really hits the fan. **THis is the first time I've read an espionage novel that wasn't overseas, and enjoyed it immensely. Adam, trying to do what's right, only ends up digging himself into a deeper hole. And when the tables turn, it's very interesting to see how he handles it. Watching him walk away from it all took guts that Adam didn't know he had, and that made me like him that much more. Terrific twists, suspense, and mind games make for a realy good book! Don't miss this one!

I received this book for free from the publisher. All content and opinions are my own. Anne Peabody is married off to Mr. Merrick, a man twice her age, by her greedy father. On her wedding day, a young printer named Jack Hampton impulsively kisses her, carried away by the revolutionary spirit inspired by the repeal of the Stamp Act. It’s her best memory of that otherwise dismal day. Jump forward ten years. It’s 1776. Anne is now a widow and working to make ends meet in New York with her loyal friends Sally, a Scottish indentured servant, and Titus, a free black man. She encounters Jack again, this time a more somber Son of Liberty. As the events of the Revolutionary War unfold, so does Anne and Jack’s romantic adventure. The Tory Widow is a historical novel with a very healthy dose of romance. The plot is compelling. The writing is unobtrusive. And the research appears to me to be impeccable. And the characters! I really liked Anne, Jack, and the rest of the cast of characters. And yet, I just wasn’t as invested in their fates as I felt I should be. Also, there was a fair amount of bawdiness. The language, in particular, made me pause a couple of times. And, I know this is a romance, but sometimes it was hard to suspend disbelief that a widow in revolutionary times would be so . . . free with her virtue. If you know what I mean. All of that aside, though, this is a well researched, well-written, well-paced historical romance.

The main character is so evil! She really is horrible, and if you can stomach the incest it is actually a good book. I think she did a great job of making the main character the 'bad guy'. Sometimes I actually wanted her to get her way, even though I knew she was evil! I think that shows talent that the author can make you feel that way and the book is a page turner near the end...I had to see what happened!

Don't believe the hype. I'm sure they didn't hand out the Hugo award to this thing for nothing, but it's another one of those that I'm sure was excellent back in the day, but has not aged well with time. Loved the mathematics and prediction/prophecy bit, but the short-storyish style of the novel was flat and caused it to drag for lack of character involvement. The focus was on the plight of the Foundation, but it wasn't enough to keep me engaged. I was looking forward to reading this and the following installments, but I'm going to stop with this one.

Our teacher read this book out loud to our class in Fourth Grade, and upon a second reading more recently, the humor and feeling laced into the pages of this book stands up just as well now as it did for me then. This is simply a very good all-around story, and I was glad to have another opportunity to read it, and to rediscover the skills of Judy Blume. I was also a fan of the Fudge T.V. series in the mid-90's, which I watched whenever possible on Saturday mornings. I hope that new readers will continue to find this book, as I think that they will discover people and plots that they can relate to, and in Judy Blume an author who is always willing to write more good books.
