I was happy to win a free giveaway copy of U.L. Harper's book, In Blackness through Goodreads and I thank U.L. Harper for his warm and thoughtful inscription. I came to the novel completely blind to what it was about, which allowed me to fully enjoy the build-up towards its climax. Though the writing style is not as full-bodied as literary works, the absence of detailed descriptions of setting added to the book's eerie surrealism. What U.L. Harper lacks in descriptive writing, he makes up in his ability to compel you to turn the page in anticipation of discovering upcoming events. Though the characters' flaws could not fully articulate the potential richness of their relationships to one another, which is what I believe U.L. Harper attempted to do in his story, the characters themselves became representations of larger societal values: Lenny, the religious skeptic with survival instincts; Saline, the spiritual seeker and peacemaker; Busak, the "entrepreneur;" and Dustin, the rebellious advocate. Together they form the microcosm of survival. What was inevitably interesting in this piece was the creative science fiction of what and who these characters needed to face. Its details were reflections of known stereotypes, yet descriptions of horrific and graphic images of potentially our communal fear: extermination. This novel could very easily be adapted into a screenplay for a sci-fi movie, which with the right budget, special effects, and producer could help propel it to its fullest potential. This novel is a simple, yet good start to a science fiction series that can entertain the youthful sci-fi audience in which it is intended.

This was so delightful--a fun, clever story. My 10 year-old really liked it, so much so that she really wanted to tell me the end but knew it was worth me reading it myself.

Well written but the best part, for me, was the inspiration.

I have been fascinated with the Japanese relocation camps. There was one near my husbands home and his father use to play basketball against the Japanese at the camp. Jamie Fords story is set in Seattle and introduces an intriguing character named Henry Lee. Henry, who was born in America is bullied by his white classmates, Chinese kids and even his father. He finds a very unlikely allies in a Japanese girl and a black saxophone player. The story is told from Henry's point of view in 1942 and 1986. We watch Henry grow and change and learn...learn what is important to him. It's hard not to become friends with the characters in the book.

Good story, just not a fan of James Patterson's writing style. Too over the top for me.

This books are "eh" for me. I read them because they're quick and because it's a series, so I feel like I have to finish them. It's not like they take a huge chunk of time away from me reading other books. This one was my least favorite in the series so far. Luce travels back in time to learn more about her past lives and her relationship with Daniel. Sounds like a good concept. However, it got old fast. I enjoyed the first couple "travels", but after that.. it was extremely predictable and boring.

I don't usually save the books I read for pleasure but this is a keeper. I learned so much about WWII in the Pacific. A story of courage and perseverence that will inspire anyone. It is great to hear someone tell the story; so many vets come home and suffer in silence. My patriotism grows with each passing year. I hope those who suffered and died for our freedoms did not do so in vain.
