I liked the fact that the author was born and raised in my area of Minnesota. The story is very well told weaving back and forth from reality to supernatural.

The Magus by John Fowles is a long novel that starts slowly. A young Englishman named Nicholas Urfe. He tells of his early life then describes an affair with a young Australian girl, whom he subsequently abandons to take a position teaching English on a remote Greek island. This part of the story is a bit of a slog, with part of the problem being the un-likability of Urfe. He’s a bit of a dick to put it succinctly. The story picks up after he meets a wealthy local named Maurice Conchis. Conchis becomes part friend, part mentor to Urfe. During their meetings Conchis tells stories of his early life, not all of which Urfe believes to be true. Urfe also undergoes a number of experiences which may or may not be real; a series of psychological scenarios possibly orchestrated by Conchis, in which no-one is who they seem, referred to as the Godgame. This portion of the novel is very absorbing as the reader, along with Nicholas strive to undercover what is true, what is false and ultimately what Conchis’s motivations are. The ‘Godgame’ gets increasingly more complex and Fowles ups the intensity. However when the story moves back to London it completely runs out of steam and (view spoiler)In the end the Magus was all style and no substance. Blah!

I did not enjoy this as I did The Secret Life of Bees, but the writing was still excellent.

This is an amazing book I had it read to me and read it myself several times throughout elementary school. It is a sad, but beautiful story. It is a must-read.

I thought that it was an okay read. Not my choice of genre, but it was still good. I thought that this book was interesting because it was written like a script, or more like a screenplay for a movie. I also liked what the story was about, how a 16 year old African-American was on trial for murder, and how through the whole book you also get to develop your own verdict. In the end I thought that the verdict that the jury gave was the same verdict I would have given.
