Basically, a young, naive girl finds herself stuck in the world of drugs. As she struggles to find herself she has to decide between her family or her addiction. Reading this feels like reading an actual personal diary and its a whole lot more interesting than the Diary of Anne Frank. This book has shocked me more than once and although it made me slightly curious about what hardcore drugs would be like initially, it has ensured that they wont ever exist in my future.

...but not actual ghosts. You'd think if one started with "nothing but ghosts" and then subtracted the ghosts, there would be left nothing, but in fact there's gardening and eating and a summer job and the library and a crush. So, normal life, basically. Add a small town "mystery" (i.e. nosiness) for color. The prose was good if a bit too self-consciously writers'-workshop-ish for my taste.

Finished this today on a busride back from New York City. It was an engrossing and a quick read but I found it a bit lacking. The story idea was very interesting and I found myself reading just to find out what happens. The pacing is a trifle slow, but that is forgivable since it is setting up the basis for the rest of the series. My main problem with the book was a very small one, but it bugged me because of my biological background. It was the biological infeasiblity of large lizards dominating the ecosystem of the Americas while still having a rather large population of mammals--both small rodents and buffalo. But it was a very personal nitpick and probably would not bother anyone else. It was a very interesting look at what if's and I already own the second book so I will read it.
