Eileen Goujdge is hit or miss in her writing. Her books can be so mundane and then there is one that is a page turner and that is WOMAN IN RED. Telling the tale from two different generations and showing how they mesh is what hold your interest. From Grandmother to Granddaughter; from Grandfather to Grandson; from WWII to present day the suspense keeps you going and the meshing at the end, though epected, is very pleasing.

I really enjoyed this book and read it in the span of about two days. The story of two friends who met in '74 and remained friends for 30 years - through relationships, betrayal, life, family and all things related to those topics. It mirrored my own life in terms of cultural references so there was a bit of a personal connection.

Kestrel: vampire..but part witch,Ash's sister,middle child out of the three sisters(not including Ash),seventeen and has hair the color of old gold sweeping back from her face,eyes were amber and hawklike,milky skin,never gentle,goes to Dewitt High School,does a blood-tie ceremony with Mark and Mary(which will make them families forever with the three sisters)..so they wont betray the 3 vamp sisters,broke NightWorld law by telling Mark and Mary,went to find jeremy and find out more about him. Jade Redfern: vampire..but part witch,Ash's sister,youngest of the three sisters(not including Ash),sixteen,hiplength white-blond hair and green eyes,goes to Dewitt High School,likes MArk back,had to tell Mark and Mary the truth about what she and her sisters are when they followed her into the woods and found them feeding on a deer,does a blood-tie ceremony with Mark and Mary(which will make them families forever with the three sisters)..so they wont betray the 3 vamp sisters,breaks every NightWorld law by telling Mark and Mary..and also falling in love with a human,went to find jeremy and find out more about him. Tiggy: Jade's cat,golden eyes and black fur. Ash: vampire..but part witch,the brother of Rowan..Kestrel..and Jade,bad,eighteen, knows his sisters ran away and came to find them with Quinn,ash blond-hair,tilted color-changing eyes,was talking to Claudine,lanky and elegant,deancut features,Mrs. Burdock's great-nephew,trying to control Mary's mind(failed),walked into Mary and got a astronomy lesson(he saw stars no human could see cause they're far away and that gave Mary the idea he's not the same as humans),belongs to one of the dubs(Black Flower),helps his three sisters..and Mary&Mark find out who killed Aunt Opal,cares about Mary b/c he knows Mary is his soul-mate,went to find jeremy and find out more about him,goes stargazing with Mary(but they went walking instead),during the walk he sugested she kiss him(she did b/c she saw how he changed so much the last few days),was going to turn Mary into a vampire(but she wasnt ready),whenever touching Mary..he feels a shock(that tells them they're soul-mates),got hit with a club while with Mary in a isolated place and was knocked unconcious,when Quinn came..Ash lied to him about ash killing aunt opal and jeremy..and that the girls wanted to stay at that area for hunting,leaves at the end to go back to the island..but is coming back to mary the next year. Quinn: helps Ash find the sisters,eighteen,made-vampire,extremely powerful telepath,had a heart like a glacier and he despised humans. Mrs. Burdock/Aunt Opal: vampire,lives in an old Victorian farmhouse,great-aunt of Rowan..Kestrel..Jade.. and Ash,letting her nieces live with her,forgot to pick up her three nieces(causing them to get a ride with 2 strangers..Todd and Vic), skin was like leather: yellow-brown..hard..smooth..and almost shinny,bald,was found by Jade in the cellar dead with a stake through her chest,got buried in the backyard with Jade's two dead kittens. Unde Hodge: told a human about the NightWorld and got staked while alive. Mary-Lynnette Carter: human,Mark's sister,dark black shinny hair,tan,a year and a half older than Mark,interested in astronomy,when saw a jupiter(thought it was a star)..wished for romance for both her and Mark,seventeen-year-old,spyed on the three vampires burying mrs.burdock,gets suspicious and makes Mark go with her over to Mrs.Burdock's house to check out whats going on,senior,goes to Dewitt High School,kicked Ash in the shin when he touched her and she felt a electricity buzz,trys to find Todd and Vic(she thinks they're part of the events the vampire girls were in),went to the garden to dig up the hole to find the body(but she was interupted by a noise and ran into the farmhouse..only to find her brother),follows the three vamp sisters when she and mark saw them carrying a black bag into the woods,saw the three vamps girl feed on a dear in the woods(found out they were vampires),became a tinnie bit vamp(b/c of the blood-tie ceremony) for a few days(since it wears off..but if she gets bitten again in the meanwhile by a vamp she'll turn into one forever),likes Ash(but doesnt know it),barely found out what the black-symbols means and remembers Jeremy wearing one,went to find jeremy and find out more about him,goes stargazing with Ash,Ash's soul-mate(but they went walking instead),kissed Ash for the first time during that walk,wanted Ash to turn her into a vampire(but she wasnt ready so he didnt),got tied up by jeremy while ash was unconcious,dreamed of white sharp teeth a few days back(and found out it was Jeremy she was dreaming about),saved Ash from jeremy by getting silver from her car(the knife) and killing Jeremy. Mark: human,Mary-Lynnette's brother,clear blue snapping eyes,dark black shinny hair,tan,junior,interested in astronomy,when saw a jupiter(thought it was a star)..wished for excitment in his small town,shy,not shy in front of Jade(likes her),goes to Dewitt High School,follows the three vamp sisters into the woods with mary,saw the three vamps girl feed on a dear in the woods(found out they were vampires),became a tinnie bit vamp(b/c of the blood-tie ceremony) for a few days(since it wears off..but if she gets bitten again in the meanwhile by a vamp she'll turn into one forever),went to find jeremy and find out more about him,doesnt become a vampire but is still dating Jade. Ben: Mark's friend. Mr.Carter: Mary and Ben's dad,married. Claudine: Mark's and Mary's stepmother,Belgian and very pretty..with curly dark hair and sparkling-dark eyes,ten years older than MaryLynnette. Vic Kimble: seemed to be about Rowan's age,deeply tan,blond hair and dirty,was with Todd when seeing the three vampire sisters needing a ride..and offered them one,wanted to rape the three sisters(which resulted with him being fed on but not dying..just getting brainwashed). Todd Akers: seemed to be about Rowan's age,deeply tan,brown hair,was with Vic when seeing the three vampire sisters needing a ride..and offered them one,wanted to rape the three sisters(which resulted with him being fed on but not dying..just getting brainwashed). Sheriff Akers: Todd's father,cop. Bunny Marten: pretty, with soft short blond hair,round..dimpled face,blue eyes,works at Briar Creek general store,senior,was hitting on Ash when he was with Mary..Mark..and the 3 sisters trying to find jeremy,uses the same kind of wood that the goat was killed with(so shes one of Mary's suspects). Jeremy Lovett: Mary's crush,human,brown hair,tall,brown eyes with heavy lashes,a loner(he doesnt go out with girls),parents had died in Medford when he was just a baby,nice,works at the gas station,lives alone(parents died and his uncle dissapeared) in the woods,always wears a black ring(it has one of the NightWorld symbols on it..a black Foxglove),a werewolf,likes Mary,knocked Ash unconcious and tied Mary up after their walk(so he can kill Ash and so Mary wont get in the way..reason: he wanted the area all too himself..as in deer,etc),was the one who killed Aunt Opal(he lost his temper when she said her three vamp nieces were coming into his territory),died. Ethyl: one of Aunt Opal's goats,pure white,with a sweet face and a broad forehead,got staked by a person(the same one that staked Opal),had a black-eye symbol in her mouth. Crane Linden: vampire,very kind,has mental problems(he cant read),usually sends mail from the island to aunt opal,helped the 3 vamp girls run away off the island. James Rasmussen: born-vampire(lamia),Poppy's soulmate. Poppy: made-vampire,jame's soulmate. Facts: -After the blood-tie ceremony,if your a human,you turn a tiny bit vamp..but it wears off in a few days.BUT if u get bitten in the meantime..you stay vamp forever. -Danger to different kinds of species: Silver for werewolves,iron for witches ... And wood for vampires. -Soulmates can read each other's minds without even trying.You cant pick your soul-mate..it can be someone u hate. -Symbol of flowers: Witches use black dahlias,werewolves use black foxglove,made vampires use black roses. -There's a chain of dubs called the Black Iris.

Helen Keller is truly amazing. She found so much joy in life from friendships, nature, literature, and by choosing not to dwell on her limitations (and they are more severe than I can imagine). This book provides a three-dimensional view of her life up to her early twenties: her own autobiography--and she is a gifted writer; her letters--incredible to see how quickly she picked up language; and her teacher, Miss Sullivan's account--so insightful. Seth was getting updates every day on Helen Keller while I read it, I was so fascinated that I had to share.

I really, really love these books by Steve Coll. Ghost Wars, Getty Oil, The Breakup of ATT. There's something about the way he tells the play-by-play that really resonates with my conception of drama and intrigue. If I was more articulate, I would tell you what it was about his voice that I like so much, I'm not.
