REVISED MY REVIEW: Like a more playful, cheeky Herbert Marcuse. Perceptive analysis of a culture that forces itself to "eat its own shit" and 'lays out the past ahead of us, but disguises it as the future'.

I'm going to preface my review of A Sign in Blood with a disclaimer: My wife was a test reader for Ms. Sipe as she wrote this novel, so I did hear a thing or two about it when it was still a work in progress. However, I didn't read it until it was in its published form, and I have no connections with the author other than through my wife. Overall, I enjoyed this story. The world is well fleshed-out, both politically, and with an innovative system of magic. The plot makes sense, although it feels somewhat hurried at times. The only thing holding this novel back from a four-star review (a five-star review is a rare thing for me, indeed, so think "4 stars = excellent") is that I wished for a bit more physical description of the settings. The description is there, in enough detail to allow me to form a good mental impression of the space the characters occupy. However, I think it could be better. Where some authors leave you practically able to smell and taste the scenes, I felt more like I was looking at aphotographs of them. That minor nitpick aside, I found myself drawn into the story, and at the end, I found myself wondering "What happens next?" For the reader looking for a "new" author to try, I recommend Marion Sipe.

I really enjoyed the audio version of this book - the first by Pratchett I have ever read. The world and folklore in this story are so completely realized, and the version of Britain so spot-on and tongue-in-cheek, it's absolutely delightful to get immersed in it.

going down as one of my top 6 or 7 favorite books! absolutely great. I cried several times. the book enlightened me to Russia in the early 1900's but manages to not leave the reader hopeless and sad.

This was the first graphic novel I have read. I really enjoyed it. For me, the images told stories that the text did not.
this book is beautifully written and it provides good advice/perspective.
The eleventh in the Special Agent Pendergast series. I kid not. Not as much of a page-turner as I’m accustomed to from them and I’ve yet to decide how I feel about this unflappable, Holmesian protagonist being sloppy and careless and reckless. As is typical of their mid-series trilogies, this one ended on a cliff-hanger. I expected it but I’ve expected them before and felt more anxious for the next one than I do now. I’ll read it. I can’t not read it but I don’t much mind the year-long wait this time.
