Loved this book. Something unexpected happened at the end, that I didn't see coming. Great read, a real page turner!!

The usual fun Sarah Vowell essays but at times they seemed stretched out.

hmm. the book itself is written just fine - it's breezy and quick and goes well with a couple of beers on the back porch. it's just.... look, we've all quit a job once or twice in our lives without giving the two weeks' notice, leaving people in the lurch, bla bla bla. it's a dick move, but it feels great and it leaves you with a fun story that will impress impressionable people and depress your depression-era grandparents. BUT! DUDE! if you do this with every job you take, in 33 states, for twelve years, you are not the freewheelin' bob dylan, the wanderin' dion dimucci, the smoothly operatin' sade, or the folk hero pete "johnny dishwashing-job-quitter-seed" jordan. no - you are just kind of a self-centered and irresponsible chump that quits a lot of jobs. ok. i will now go back to lecturing today's younger generation about littering and energy conservation and the dangers of hitchhiking.

Best science fiction book of all time. It starts a little slow but gets going in a hurry. The journey of a young boy into a hero of an entire civilization.

** spoiler alert ** I think I'm going to give up on translations, well, at least ones that stem from Japan. Here is a story of incest, rape, and prostitution, which, I suppose, is meant to shock or enthrall you, but the writing (actually, I should say translation) is so horrid that, while I'm supposed to be disgusted/empathetic/sympathetic/insert-random-emotion here, I'm just distracted by the wording. While I normally blame the author for this, I can't help to think maybe Steven Clark shouldn't be doing translations or anything with literature, ever. Because I don't read Japanese, I'll never know the point to this book as I learned nothing, as I don't feel sorry for the main character, as I don't even know what happened. When you're introduced to her soon-to-be rapist, you're wondering why in hell you're being introduced to him. Again, Western literature has tainted me and I probably expect things to happen in such a way, but still, I didn't see much of a purpose of the whole chapter. I'm still puzzled trying to see why a book like this (again, perhaps just the translation) - where a emotionally closed off girl has sex with her mentally handicapped brother, becomes a prostitute while continuing to have sex with her mentally handicapped brother, discovers she's the product of artificial insemination, searches out her biological father, only to have sex with him - well, you see my point - even exists. Perhaps it seemed like a good idea where shock media sells, but when a translation is so horrible, you have to ponder that question in what a publishing house was thinking when they said, "It seems like a good idea." Did they even read it before pushing it out there? I should add this is the first time I completed reading the book. I'd tried in the past several times, but each time opted that shoving a pencil through my eye would have been a better deal. However, I did spend money on it, so I felt like I had to read it. This was Snakes and Earrings all over again.

In which Artemis meets himself coming forwards going backwards and we get to do a compare and contrast to see how much his character has grown. This one is all timey-wimey, as the Doctor might say, and it's a fun tale, but it didn't really make me laugh out loud as a couple of the earlier ones have done. There's more of the young demon No1, which is ace (I think he might be overtaking Foaly as my favourite character), and not too much Diggums, which is also ace. There are also two new Fowls, Artemis' twin brothers Myles & Beckett -- another nod, I imagine, to Greek mythology and one to Samuel Beckett -- who might grow on me.

This is a series of short stories and possibly a lecture to an Indiana college. Most deal with some sort of war-time or militaristic setting and flesh out some of the anti-war themes found in Slaughterhouse Five. In these stories wartime victors are not necessarily heroes, and war is seen as evil except by career warriors who are generally lampooned. There are occasional sane people who see the insanity of war, and they are generally the heroes of the stories, often because they don't follow orders that would result in harm to others. Somewhat coincidentally about the time I was listening to this Corporal Dakota Meyer was in the news. He received the medal of honor for rescuing other soldiers, but was able to do so only by disobeying orders. Interesting.

Pretty funny stuff from Christipher Moore again. I can imagine this book would be a lot better if I was a Jesus follower but I'm not so alot of the references were foreign to me.

What a powerhouse of great writing. I didn't know anything of Durrell until I adopted the MLA "Best 100 Novels" challenge and it totally delivered. Really sensual stuff; it's inexplicable, but you really feel these words with five senses and your whole body. Best of what I liked about this four novel series was the chronology. The texts aren't linear, nor are they linear passages rearranged, it's more that the story is built on a skeletal framework and built up around that, details being added over pages.
Este libro sobre asuntos financieros desde una perspectiva cristiana es a la vez interesante e informativo. Participar en el "ayuno financiero" de tres semanas en el que se basa el libro honestamente cambió mi vida. Mis gastos nunca serán los mismos.
