This author was charming at a book fair and her book sounded interesting, the locale and the subject matter, but it was so badly written I couldn't get past the first chapter. Things were mis-spelled, facts were wrong if it's supposed to take place in 1985, and there were cliches everywhere. Sorry. If anyone's interested, I'll give it away but otherwise I'm going to put it in the recycling bin.

I will not finish this book...too long. The August selection for my book club proved to be mildly interesting during the first part; however, there were far too many references to cultural events and people of the Montreal 80's that it would be dificult for someone younger or from elsewhere to understand or appreciate. I have abandoned this book at the halfway point in the Galapagos. I simply don't care anymore about Alex. It's been too hot a summer for such a heavy read and it dosen't go well with the beer and the beach. It is not likely that I will pick it up again. Perhaps if you are a 30-something struggling with Life's decisions, you might like to spend a few months plowing through this book.

This is a funny, sweet story of friendship and sacrifice. I highly recommend it for both believers and non-believers. It's well written, has a great plot and even though you know what's coming, it will continue to surprise you. I can't wait to read other books by Christopher Moore

Honestly, this novel kinda drove me nuts. Packed with LDS cliches, I only finished it because I'd started and it wasn't terrible. This is good for someone who wants a feel-good love story and nothing more.

Might be the most important book I've ever read. Makes me want to toss the rest of my books out. Yeah, those same ones I hoard and whose covers I caress like they're my babies or something. Now those books seem like meaningless wastes of paper. It's the kind of book a few years ago I'd have poked fun at, rolled my eyes at. I guess I found it at the right time. If it's not the right time for a person to read this book they just won't get it. If that's you, don't throw it out. Tuck it away somewhere for later.
