Weaves all the forces of how Californian wines became world class. Just as immigrants came to America for a new life, many of the people responsible for improving the quality of wine in California were immigrants. They dreamed of making their own wine, owning wineries, and worked so hard to accomplish what they set out to do.

This is one of the few books that no matter how many times I read it, I simply can’t get into the story. The setting is fantastic and creepy at times, but I can’t get into the characters. At times, the plot is simplistic (which can be a good thing), but I was bored to tears. I didn’t like it very much whenever I first read the book, so it’s a little strange that my feelings haven’t quite changed over time.

It was a beautiful story up until the end. The ending fell very flat. Loved the descriptions of the research and of the jungle itself. Hated the end though.

A mass market paperback in OK condition; slightly yellowed pages, worn cover. This is a new edition published in 1991 ("Author's Definitive Edition" label on the cover); the original copyright is 1977. From the back: "Card has taken the venerable sf concepts of a superman and interstellar war against aliens, and, with superb characterization, pacing and language, combined them into a seamless story of compelling power. This is Card at the height of his very considerable power--a major SF novel by any reasonable standards." --Booklist My review: I picked this book up through FreeCycle because I loved Card's books on writing, and I knew the book by reputation as an SF classic and award-winner (both Hugo and Nebula.) Then it sat on my shelf for three years. My interests were more with history and HF, so it languished. This year I started a new system for reading my TBR pile which didn't allow me to overlook older books (I'm reading by size-large books for home and small books for commuting and have given myself permission to stop reading, if something doesn't grab me.) This book got promoted from commuting book to fireside book because it grabbed me. It deserved its awards and has completely held up over the decades. The titular Ender is a super smart child--a boy of six--at the beginning of the book, who is recruited by the international space force, to prepare to command a fleet to defend against an invasion by "the buggers"; an alien race who tried to invade and colonize Earth several decades before and were barely repulsed. The book is from Ender's point of view, except brief adult conversations that lead off each chapter that give some context and foreshadow action. The book is cleverly written, the characters well-drawn, the plot compelling, and the ending delivers. Highly recommended!

The Confession was my return to Grisham after some time and it was well worth the wait. Terrific storytelling that was both thought provoking and heart wrenching.
There are books that makes you cry on the bus. Or in your bed. Or sofa. Or maybe even when you are with friends. There are books that makes you cry because everything is so beautiful and the words in it makes you think. Think in a good way. A happy-sad way. Everyone needs to think in that way. At least sometimes.

It was a little bit of a slow read, but I would definitely recommend this book to anyone who enjoys animals/nature/that whole bit. If this book had been all about the baboon group Sapolsky studied I would have given it five stars... but alas, it wasn't. After more than one story about slow travel through Africa and being forced to drink Cokes or eat spaghetti by enigmatic companions, I was wishing for more baboons or at least more interesting stories about the local Masai. Funny little stories and revelations outweigh the dull stretches. Warning: Heavily laden with anthropomorphism!

This book was just as good as the first. Had me so hooked!! Loved the chaos that the introduction of Seb brought to this book and to Willow and Alex's relationship. I'm not normally a fan of the whole love triangle thing, but I think it was needed a little in this book. Can't wait until the third and final book comes out!!!
