This book sure didn't have much of a typical plot with developing tension, climax, etc. (I can say that word now; I'm married.) It was more like a journal saying "Some kids went back to Narnia and had a nice time." Like the Fellowship of the Ring. They go from point A to point B. But it was a fun read nevertheless. It was full of great symbolism. My favorite was when Eustace, having been turned into a dragon, wanted to become a boy again. Aslan told him to undress, so Eustace scratched off his skin. It felt good, but he found that he was still a dragon. After shedding a few more layers of skin he realized he couldn't do it by himself. So Aslan with one swipe of his paw cut all the way through him and tore all the way through the flesh, revealing a nice little boy again. It hurt like the Dickens, but it felt great to be relieved. This is similar to a story in The Great Divorce. Lewis is adamant that if God is actually going to use you then you must die, and that is not fun. But being reborn is the greatest experience anyone can feel. Unfortunately, I zoomed through my fun book too fast, and I still have over halfway to go to get through my grown up book...

Carrie Ryan, thank you. Thank you for writing a book that was beyond amazing. Not only was their one romance, but two! Catcher and Annah were adorable, however i still have a cetain favoritism for Gabry and Elias, but Catcher and Annah definetly are not far behind. The way Annah glued the broken Catcher together, and in the process of that realized that she needs to stop surving, but live. Just was amazing. I wish i could just erase the whole memory of it from my head so i can reread it and be amazed all over again. :3

Not quite what you'd expect from John Connolly, but in this case the surprise is quite wondrous. This book is a must for those who grew up with a love of books -- especially of the fairy tale or fantasy variety.

I had Jesse’s copy from home and he had bought another copy while in Cambridge. We read this together and managed to have several cool conversations both during and after our reading. What to say? Such gorgeous language. I think I’d been intimidated by this book, might have started it years ago and set it down. It was gripping from the first page. Stories within stories; endless twists and turns in the storyline. Noted frequent use of portmanteau words such as: his head backflung; while the slowspitting and squatting men watch her covertly; in a room lighted by a bugswirled kerosence lamp. Interesting use of repetition of specific words; intricate character development. Need to read more Faulkner! Connection of beginning to end. First paragraph: Sitting beside the road, watching the wagon mount the hill toward her, Lena thinks, ‘I have come from Alabama: a fur piece. All the way from Alabama a-walking. A fur piece.’ Thinking although I have not been quite a month on the road I am already in Mississippi, further from home than I have ever been before. I am now further from Doane’s Mill than I have been since I was twelve years old. The ending: “’Saulsbury, Tennessee’ and I looked back and saw her face. And it was like it was already fixed and waiting to be surprised, and that she knew that when the surprise come, she was going to enjoy it. And it did come and it did suit her. Because she said, “’My, my. A body does get around. Here we aint been coming from Alabama but two months, and now it’s already Tennessee.’”

This was another enjoyable book to read. I seem to be reading a lot of make-believe lately but I guess I'm always in the mood for a good escape. This book is based off of one of the Grimms' fairy tales. I wasn't as familiar with the tale but it turned out to be one of my favorites. I wouldn't be surprised if some year or other this ended up as a Disney movie.

One word.... Classic! What I love about this book is the use of imagination! The power of imagination in a child is amazing and Max used his to escape to to make sense of his situation. He felt he had no control over his home life, so he escapes into a world that was all his own, that no matter how fierce, how big, or how scary his monsters were, he was in-charge and not afraid. But after awhile he began to realize that he wasn't ready to be in-charge, that taking care of these big creatures, their feelings, shelter and food, to dealing this their fights, was a lot for a little kid to handle and that he had a lot to learn from his mom. So in the end, he comes home and sees that what he actually has, love, that his life isn't all that bad. What a great book to teach children about the power of imagination but also that the grass isn't always greener on the other side.

This was a fun, quick read. The characters are well-written and the plot (a fight against the government's plan for absolute power over the people) will please any conspiracy buff. This is the first in the series and I look forward to reading the next book.

Wow. I could not stop reading when I got to the last third of this book. The character development of the first two books really made this third one a raw emotional experience. The way everything is described is so realistic... fighting isn't glorified; it's horrible, gut wrenching, and animalistic. Feelings and emotions are intense. This book was like a bucket of cold water taking me away from fantasy and into a realistic memoir from another world. I've only given 5 stars to Robert Jordan and Rowling when it comes to fiction, but this one was very well deserved. Highly recommended.
