One of my all time favorite descriptive paragraphs is in this book. How the protagonist falls in love as he watches his secretary lift the garbage can of glass bottles to hit the constable in the head (thus saving his skin). It's really great.

I can't really find anything to say about this book that will do it justice. I am just sorry I waited so long to read it. I have heard that some of Haley's claims about his genealogy and research are disputed, but I don't care--I still laughed and I still cried. It might not be fact, but it might be the truth.

As other reviewers have said, plays are meant to be performed, not read... Or, at least, performed and then read later on, huddled up in a corner whilst reminiscing about the amazing feat of acting that you were just privy to. Either way, I adore Twelfth Night primarily because I was able to see several productions of it soon after reading it; I was already invested in the characters, and seeing them brough to life only furthered my love of the play. Twelfth Night shares innumerable themes with Shakespeare's other comedies, but I've always considered it my favourite for it's ensemble of characters, marvelously constructed case of mistaken-identity and drag, and rather addicting dialogue. It's a quick read and has more depth than one would initially presume, so I definitely think it's worth the read. -C

I learned how a book really can support many readings. This book can be understood in many ways, yet is not irritatingly ambiguous.

A science-fiction satire on advertising and consumerism run amok written in the early '50s (so, yes, parts of it play a little like Mad Men...of the future!). Second half is not quite as good as the first half, some of it is dated, but nonetheless a fun read, with a lot still dead-on, relevant and funny. Part of what helps is that the protagonist Mitch, whose values you are to deplore, is nonetheless very smart and amusing. A couple of quotes - Mitch's boss talking to him about Mitch's official status as a 'star class copywriter' (this rank puts him far above the consumer and even tourist classes): "That's power, Mitch, absolute power. And you know the old saying. Power ennobles. Absolute power ennobles absolutely." Mitch, after talking to a member of the movement resisting the current society's overdrive: "I hated the twisted minds who had done such a thing to a fine consumer like Gus. It was something like murder. He could have played his part in the world, buying and using and making profits for his brothers all around the globe, ever increasing his wants and needs, ever increasing everyone's work and profits in the circle of consumption, raising children to be consumers in turn. It hurt to see him converted into a sterile zealot."

I liked the relationship, the story and the wrap-up in this series closer however I wasn't as enamored with the love scenes. The tension building early on is good but some of that is diffused by his and her 'I like to watch' scenes and when they actually get around to making love it isn't anywhere as explosive as it could have been.
Are you trying to kill me? Now I need to go find a full-length biography of Joan Baez. *sigh*
